Al on Just For Laughs: Amp'd

Post by HalifaxKat »

Watched Al host Just For Laughs: Amp'd special on The Comedy Network tonight. In case not many people saw this show, I'll give a brief rundown:

Al and the band performed two songs: CNR and WBYL (in that order, with CNR about halfway through the show and WBYL at the very end). The show opening had Al cranking up the "Weirdness" level on an amplifier, which I thought was pretty cool! He joked for a couple of minutes off the top like you would expect a host to do. My favorite line was, “My parents decided to give me accordion lessons when I was very young. I remember thinking why couldn’t I have just been spanked like the other children?”

He introduced 5 different acts over the course of the show and wore a Hawaiian shirt and frameless glasses as the host, but changed for CNR and WBYL (he kept his glasses on and left his hair down for WBYL, but his glasses were off for CNR and he was without a hat and jacket as well). I thought WBYL came out great! The camera angles were interesting and close-up and I noticed a lot of detail! However, I thought the vocal mic was a bit wonky for CNR (or at least how it sounded on my TV), so I'm really glad we've got the DVD version for that song (which I already specifically raved about in another thread!)

Al closed the show by essentially thanking himself for being so awesome. And... that's all I can think to say! :)

Oops, I forgot to add that they didn't actually perform a complete version of WBYL -- the band cut off right before Al would normally go into the high pitched part at the end (not a TV edit, but it was actually performed this way). They also skipped most of the last verse (or that might possibly have been an edit, but I know the last part wasn't, as it was all in one camera shot... he just got up from kneeling and launched right into his closing remarks without skipping a beat!) Still, what it lacked in completeness, it more than made up for in other ways. And for completeness, again, there is the live DVD.

It's supposed to be put up on the Comedy Network's website at some point (I emailed them about that), although a YouTube version would probably be better, especially if Comedy Network blocks certain countries from viewing stuff (probably not for something like Just For Laughs, but I know they used to redirect U.S. viewers to Comedy Central's website when attempting to view a Comedy Central clip).

Aww, that sucks for the non-Canadians! Well, if it doesn't appear on YouTube by the weekend, I'll see if I can figure out how to put it up on YouTube (the Al parts). Mind you, it would be absolutely horrible picture/sound quality, as my "recording" of the program consisted of pointing my webcam at the TV, so I'm really hoping it won't come to that... but I can certainly sympathize since Canadians often encounter the same issue with viewing Al clips, so being on the other side of the fence this time around, I would be happy to try to help.

And she did, by digging me up from #weird-al on EFNet! I believe I got most of the program recorded here; at least I'm satisfied with my efforts. The video quality is pretty low too, at about 15 fps. The audio still shines through, will all intended silliness intact! The show can be downloaded at http://www.demonoid.me/files/details/2771969/13886910/ and if you are unfamiliar with torrents, grab the program at http://www.utorrent.com, install, then click on the download link at Demonoid.

Grab http://www.mirc.com, a great IRC client and visit #weird-al on any EFNet server!

It is seeding very slowly, I apologize. My pipes are wide open, and I'm only stopping to reboot as needed. Too bad its only 42% done as of this writing.
