No, Colbert was just a nominee like Al was. They just decided to add Comedy to the telecast that year. I guess there were enough "mainstream" comedy artists in the category to warrant televising it.

Colbert also hosted a part of the show. IIRC he did an opening monologue.

I think he just presented Song of the Year. I remember he presented it using an iPad and it was just a couple days after the iPad was first announced. "Jay-Z, did you not get one of these? Am I cooler than you?" (At this point, they cut to Jay-Z laughing at the joke and you can clearly see Al over his shoulder cracking up as well.)

I seem to recall it was presented in 99 when Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner won it. Either that or they may have just been presenting and they were announced as winners.

But other than that, I only remember a couple years ago

There's not much likelihood in them telecasting the Comedy award, because it's just not an important category.

It seems as if it'll only be cast if whoever's winning is presenting. So get Al to host, and maybe it will

But who is presenting is largely a function of who shows up. So if a lot of the nominees in the category show up, a lot of them will present, and then they'll probably air the award.
