Best Comedy Album: Grammy-Watch

Post by TMBJon »

Hey folks, I know Alpocalypse is only a few days old but it's already worth looking ahead to next spring when the 2012 Grammys come around. Alpocalypse will be up against stiff competition, including The Lonely Island's new album. Just wanted to start the dialogue and have a topic to discuss other possible contenders in this category. I think it is crucial that Al wins this Grammy, as this is clearly the best comedy album of the year and in my opinion the best Weird Al album to date.

The reason I bring this up today is because of a further complication that will be interesting to see play out: Stephen Colbert, whose "A Colbert Christmas" album beat Internet Leaks two years ago, has just released a brand new single which is actually going to press on Jack White's record label. It seems likely that Colbert could go up against Al for a rematch this year. This could result in a lot of great press, especially if Al were to beat Stephen. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether Colbert's 7" record would be eligible for the same Grammy category since his release is only one track.

From what it seems, The Lonely Island has been nominated for rap. To be honest, everyone got really hyped about TLI's last release, and I constantly heard people saying "I'm on a boat!" and "I j***ed in my pants." I've only moderately heard people saying "I just had sex." The rest of their stuff hasn't resonated as well.

But what do I know.

Agree with WM. I am not sure LI is as Grammy worthy. It was not nominated the last time.
Also, since lots of Alpocalypse has already been nominated for a Grammy in the form of Internet Leaks, would they nominate this album?
I don't even know the rules(if there are any) governing this sort of thing.

Colbert's new single has been categorized under alternative on iTunes for some reason.
I think Lonely Island will be nominated for rap, if anything.

I'd say Al has a decent shot with Alpocalypse.

As for TLI, "Shy Ronnie 2", "Motherlover", "Jack Sparrow" and "The Creep" seem to have resonated well and they're on the new cd.

Well, the obvious thing is that the category is (currently) called Best Comedy Album, so unless Stephen is planning something other than just the one single, he wouldn't be eligible anyway.

You're right, they are rather popular, but (like I said, maybe it's just me) it seems that they haven't resonated as well as, say, "I'm On a Boat."

COLBEEEEEEERRRT!!!!

...but seriously, if "Internet Leaks" could get nominated last year I'd say "Alpocalypse" barely has to worry about competition. The Lonely Island could give him a run for his money, though.

Yeah, I think it's basically a fact that he'll at least get nominated.

Is there any chance the Book of Mormon soundtrack could be grouped into this category? Or would it definitely be in the Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media category? I haven't seen a Broadway musical soundtrack in that category before.
