1 you have to call it something else
2 you wont make any money off it,
3 it cost a lot of money to put one on,
4 a lot of planning goes into it
5 you WILL lose money on doing one
6 it has to be where the person planning it lives
7 you have to pay the people performing to come
8 but if you got 20 grand to spend, go ahead and plan one
9 did i mention u WILL lose money doing one
Sorry if I'm late to the game...been distracted by...you know...stuff.

I just had to give massive props to Fred. She knows. She nailed it. She's not a bit pessimistic about it. She's right on.

Someone suggested that you could make money at $10 per ticket. I agree...if you have a venue for free and don't pay for anything other than name tags and maybe a lighting guy. Trying to hold it in a city where you don't live just costs more of what you're not going to make back.

There is no money in conventions. Even after tshirt and mug sales, breaking even is a major task. And this isn't counting the hours and hours of unpaid work.

What there is in conventions is fun.

I'm all for the convention in SoCal. It will be as ALCON as it can be without being an ALCON. I'm looking forward to attending a convention where I can actually enjoy the convention!

IMO, that's a ridiculously low price. Even with mega-volunteer hours, how can you expect an all-day, live event using actual meeting space to come in for less than the cost of a movie ticket? Twice or three times that would be more like it, for adults at least. The very successful Gallifrey One convention (Doctor Who) in Los Angeles, which DOES use mega-volunteer hours, runs 3 days and currently costs between $55 and $70, depending on how far in advance you buy your membership.
