Not to mention that he sometimes reaches out to fans with, like, his actual
arms. The article said,
A more important caution: Not every artist is cut out, or willing, to be a nurturer of fans. Many musicians just want to play music, or photographers just want to shoot, or painters paint, and they temperamentally don't want to deal with fans, especially True Fans.
And that's SO not Al. Besides having several boatloads of talent (let's see, there's the musical boatload and the comedic boatload... maybe Al has a catamaran of talent), he also has exactly the kind of friendly, attentive temperament that cares about people and doesn't mind hanging with the fans at all. When he's on tour, it sometimes seems like he spends nearly as much time in meet & greets as he does performing. I'm sure a lot of his motivation at the M&G's is simply basic kindness, wanting people to have a good experience meeting him, and gratitude because he knows fans allow him to make a living. But he really does seem to enjoy meeting up with familiar faces-- the True Fans-- in those lines. And there are many more than a thousand of us.
"Weird Al" has a charisma that's all his own. The awkward, the misshapen, the socially inept flock to his banner.
