Does anyone know if "Safety Patrol" is any good? I read that Al makes an appearance where he is performing a concert. I have thought about just buying it on video since I guess it will never be on DVD. So is it a good movie?

Oh! I saw the part where Al's in it. He's in it for quite awhile, but I've never seen the whole movie.
"Did you see Journey to the Center of the Earth?"
"I did!"
"Me neither...wait..."
"You had that planned didn't you?"
"..yeah.."

Ehhhn...it's a made-for-TV kids movie, if that answers your question.

Actually, it's not entirely unwatchable, and there are a couple of decent moments. The main protagonist kid is quirky, but not in an annoying "in your face" Macaulay Culkin sort of way (which helps immensely). The biggest problem is that its plot is just not all that interesting, even by kids-movie standards, and Savage Steve Holland, despite his success in animation, is only competent as a live-action director.

Really, Al's scenes are the most entertaining, as one gets a nice mix of Al on stage performing (granted to an album track, but still) and of his old-school "zany" over-the-top acting (screaming, falling, etc.). The band gets some good screen time, there's the visual highlight of a gigantic Al balloon (later seen on tour and then beckoning people to the Weird Al Experience at the 2002 Orange County Fair), and the guys even recorded an exclusive song for the movie.

(Ironically, Al's probably on screen more than Leslie Nielsen, the so-labeled "star" who merely graces the movie with two glorified cameos.)

As far as whether it will ever be released on DVD, who knows. It's possible, as Disney is slowly depleting its archive of new-to-DVD movies left to release.

I've had this link on my site's Weird Al Fan Action Center for a while, but Disney's web site does have a request page where people can supposedly let them know what they'd like to see released on home video. Here's the direct link to send a request for "Safety Patrol":

I appreciate the info Catra! Leslie Nielson in just for a cameo? Looking at the cover, you'd think he was in a whole lot. If I guess that is false advertising. Thanks for the link JEDM! I guess I will just stick with that for now!

Yes, very briefly.
4 words that Al said to me that blew me away:

"How's Problem Child doing?" - 7/12/11

So awesome!

He has a small, minimal part.

Well, from what I heard, he had a bigger part in the original script (or even maybe the original cut) but they decided to change it around and make it much, much less.

As for him being on the cover, implying that he'll be in the movie, that's nothing. If you ever see commercials for Anchorman on Australian TV you'll see an even worse crime of that; remember Ben Stiller's cameo in Anchorman? Of course you don't. He's in the movie for lexs than a minute, but the way the ads go for it, they act like he's a major character!
Sever your leg, please. It's the greatest day.

I can't stand it when that happens. I bought "It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" because it had a picture of John Candy on the front. He is barely in it! It was only $5.00 but still. I guess that is one way to get money though. XD
