If you were at this show, there was a scary moment that Al was able to save somehow, and most people didn't even notice. When Al came out to sing fat in his fat suit, the music started but for some reason he came in a 8 beats behind with the lyrics and it didn't match the backing track. For example, the "boing" sound played right before Al sang the lyrics and grabbed his crotch. The sound had already played as well as a the rest of the verse (whipping sounds, ground stomp).

So what happened next was odd and almost a little disappointing. He stopped the song and said "Eh, you all didn't come here to see this song anyways." The band then started playing a song about "Listen to your radio" which was really weird. I had no idea what it was about and can't find any information on the song. It is my guess that they just made something up on the fly. I just stood there in shock like "Did that really just happen?". Al had to sing the song in his fat suit and Steve just looked at Al the entire time grinning. After that song was done, they exited the stage before the encore.

I was wondering if Al or anyone else could respond with more information about this and if anything like this has happened before? :please:

Interesting tidbit, and one I know nothing about, but shouldn't this be in the touring section?

I'm sure Al could answer the question, since he was there. But he doesn't post in this forum. He does read it from time to time. As far as we know, he's never actually used his account. Usually he's just one of those "Anonymous" users.

I haven't heard of him dumping a whole song (especially a costume song, Poor Al!) but I have been at a concert when he calls for a band solo to cover some glitch. And once when he had to step away from the mic.

And yes, this should go in the touring section. I'll move it as soon as I find the topic it should link up to.

Welcome aboard, Electric.

ETA: Looks like there isn't a topic for this concert already. So this is it!

Without having been there, from what was described it seems as if the song was Elvis Costello's "Radio, Radio," which Al and the band occasionally interrupt a song with a la Elvis's infamous performance on "Saturday Night Live." IIRC from some other reports on here, it's also sometimes used for the band's sound check.

I don't know what circumstances have to happen for the guys to make the switch (a previous notable time was during "Trash Day" on the last tour, so it has happened during a costumed number before), but just throwing a guess out there, maybe because the "Fat" sound effects et al are so synched up with Al's expected movements, maybe they got too deep into the song to be able to salvage the number?

CatraDhtem,

Yes, that was the song that was played. Thanks for the information! Al didn't even get to the first chorus to Fat before he cut it because it just wasn't synced up when he started singing. I found the "Radio, Radio" you mentioned on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOuknbvu21Q), and it matches up with what happened. To see Al do that song in the fat suit was pretty hilarious though! All in all, we got to see a song that few have probably gotten to see before.

And that solves the mystery!

P.S. Sorry I couldn't post this in the touring forum first because I am a newbie.

I've seen "Radio, Radio" 3 times live, but all have been in sound check. As mentioned, Al has done it during the medley this tour and last tour in New Orleans' for "Trash Day". The band really seems to love this song, and it's amazing hearing them play it. It would definitely add more to see it performed in the "Fat" suit. You got really lucky with that Electric, unless you were a huge fan on the song "Fat".

Can you tell me if he went straight into introducing the band after "Radio, Radio" followed by the band playing? Also, do you remember which was performed: Bob or Why Does This Always Happen To Me?

Hmmm...I wonder if Al had some problems with the costume backstage and that's what caused the delay in his entrance?

Alinite27,

The interesting thing was after "Radio, Radio" was over, they left the stage. The band did not continue playing after it was over, and there were no introductions. However on Albuquerque (the last song) he introduced Jim West when he was playing a guitar solo and that's it! No other introductions for the rest of the band. I have seen him before, and I do remember introductions of the band members at least. Also, "Bob" was played at the show.

In all, the doors were to open at 6:30 on the ticket, and we didn't get in until 8:20 because of rain and a lot of cleaning at the amphitheater. By the time the roadies finished running some cabling that hadn't been done, the show started at 9:05. So on top of all that, something was bound to happen.

Ambra,

It didn't appear to me that Al came out late. He was coming through the middle of the stage when the song started, and he just started the first verse 8 beats off.. :(

That's bound to happen, maybe Al wasn't able to tell the beats or he wasn't paying too close attention. If he counts the beats like all band members do, then he may have been off a couple measures.
