That's pretty devoted though, spoiling an entire movie for yourself, just to get a song out. Thanks for doing that Al. :)

I think what you're remembering is that Al asked for information about the movie ahead of time, and was not given any. So he did what all good fans do, he surfed the net for spoilers.

Okay, I understand Yoda and Jurassic Park, since those are trademarked names. But so is "Spider-Man." I don't see any thanks to Stan Lee or Marvel Comics in the Poodle Hat liner notes. Also, why didn't he ask for permission for "The Brady Bunch," "Isle Thing," "Here's Johnny," or "Jerry Springer?" Or did he?

Maybe because he's a fan of the Star Wars stuff and really wanted to stay on GL's good side? It would be a good Ask Al question. Assuming he ever answers any questions ever again.

Sherwood Schwartz is thanked because of the Gilligan's Island portion of "Amish Paradise." So he was asked for at least one of the three songs influenced by his shows.

But the GI song is copyrighted, so of course Al had to/wanted to ask. Just mentioning a title, like in CP, shouldn't be a problem. Al once said there were various reasons why the unreleased stuff stayed that way. Depends on the song.
Hmmm...something's gone horribly awry here...

My guess is that Al didn't feel he needed to bother getting permission from Stan Lee for OTAS because the actual title of the song wasn't copyrighted, and they weren't making a video. In "Yoda" and "Jurassic Park", the titles were trademarks, it wasn't just that trademarks were mentioned, and in "Jurassic Park" and TSB, he made a video with images based on copyrighted images. Neither is the case in OTAS.

That's just my guess.
"Wow, another triple negative!"

I agree, doggans, Also, Al was referring to the movie "Spiderman", not the comic book. *I know, the movie is based on the comic book character*, but I don't think anyone has to ask permission to use a movie title in a song. In the case of "Here's Johnny" and "Jerry Springer", those songs are about public figures. Al said that he has free reign to mention any public figure he wants in any of his songs without asking permisson.

From Ask Al:

Sam (Eagle Boy) of Lowell, MA asks: Did you need permission from Jerry Springer to write the song "Jerry Springer"?

No - Jerry Springer is considered a public figure, so I have just as much right to do a song about him as I do to write a song about President Clinton or, uh… Eddie Vedder…

Patti
4 words that Al said to me that blew me away:

"How's Problem Child doing?" - 7/12/11

So awesome!

That's true Algonacchick, but it's to my understanding that if you're going to do a song about somebody, let's say a fellow WOWAY member, you should ask their permission. Of course, it could go awry if you said something like I'd like to do a song on how stupid you are, then you're going to have a problem.

On Topic: I always thought that It's Still Billy Joel To Me was one of those forbidden songs that sounded offending.

When I first heard of "It's Still Billy Joel To Me" The file was labeled, "Weird Al" Yankovic - It's Still Billy Joel To Me (Banned from radio by Billy Joel himself!!!). Of course, I made my reaserch and found no such thing, but then again the song does push the diss envelope.
