As a lot of us know now, the Mothership posted August 15 as the slated official date. It's already out there in other parts of the board but I figured I'd put it here too.

Is anybody else kinda wondering when we're going to see an official announcement from Shout! turn up somewhere? It seems all the information on the DVD posted online so far has been grabbed from Weirdal.com, including the cover art (do you like how both TVShowsonDVD and Amazon just upped and took it for their use?). I mean, it's cool that Weirdal.com had the scoop and I hope Jon gets to post the official press release first, but still, when?

Yeah, I was wondering that, too. I checked out the Shout! website just after Amazon announced the release date to see if it was correct, and was pretty surprised that they didn't have it anywhere on their site. It seems weird to me that amazon announced the release date before the company that are actually releasing it!

The thing is I don't think it is Amazon doing it but rather its customers. You can submit information to any release on Amazon's site, and evidently someone saw both the picture (originally cribbed from Weirdal.com) and the release date (originally announced under a bit of skepticism on another retailer's site) posted on TVShowsonDVD and decided to upload it up onto Amazon's product page.

Fortunately in this case the release date turned out to be correct, while the cover art was of course correct, but still, considering it still has yet to really be officially announced, Amazon (and the other stores for that matter) seems to be jumping the gun a bit on taking pre-orders. I'm not sure why it bothers me, but it just seems to muddy things a bit. One's left to ask, so is this all the information we're getting?

Here's an analogy: Let's say a movie theater started pre-selling tickets for the "Simpsons" movie right now and their justification is "Why not? We know it's coming out, the teaser trailer's already been released, and some of our regular patrons here told us the opening date." How long would that go on?

I don't know, it just seems like a breach of some kind of release etiquette.

It's not that big a deal. Amazon does that all the time. As soon as they know the release date, they're gonna post it and start taking pre-orders. That way they're the first to be able to sell the product. Why wait for an "official" announcement? If the release date changes, that doesn't affect pre-orders. They'd just send e-mails to those who pre-ordered it and let them know the shipping date would be changed.

For example, I pre-ordered the third season of "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman." A couple weeks later, Amazon sent me an E-mail to let me know that the price had actually dropped and that I would be charged the new, lower price instead of the price I pre-ordered it at.

The bottom line is it's better for business to post whatever information they get. I'm sure they didn't just take their customer's word for it. I'm sure they checked weirdal.com or perhaps even contacted Shout! themselves to confirm the date.

I agree that it would be nice to get some sort of official announcement from Shout! Factory, just because it's comforting to know that everything is set in stone. I'm not too concerned about it, though. I have a feeling that the date wouldn't have been posted on The Mothership if they weren't at least mostly sure that the date is correct.
Oh by the way, I've cracked the code.

It's comforting to know not only that, but also that DVD sites can stop stealing the image from Weirdal.com.

Oh, for crying out loud! It's NOT STEALING!

That image is the actual cover art, as provided by the official website. Amazon is using it to HELP SELL THE DVD!!! Would you rather they didn't sell it at all?

That image had to be provided by Shout Factory in order for weirdal.com to have it. So therefore they're probably sending out the image to all the other places...
