I had no idea who Nirvana was (I'd heard the song before, but didn't "get it") until Weird Al parodied them.

It was that time I went from casual fan to hardcore Al fan and as a token, I ended up with 2 all time favorites (Al and Nirvana)

:D

The same with Dire Straits - I had never heard of DS until I heard "Money for Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies" and now I'm a die-hard Dire Straits fan too. :)

But on topic, I've encountered many a retard like that person through my internet career and they're always the fan boys who, for the lack of a better word, think anything who "challenges" their "religion" derserves to die, heh.

WOOT, #27 post!

I didn't mean to single out Nirvana fans. I was more referring to the type of person that says something like that without having anything to back it up. When they're confronted with evidence that contradicts their position, they stand there slack-jawed. I know that Al has those types of fans too.
Oh by the way, I've cracked the code.

I know exactly what you mean! My mum (who hates Al with a passion and admits she doesn't know why) once said "How can you like that guy?!"

Me - "He's very talented..."
Mum - "He's not! He's hardly a real artist!"
Me - "What do you mean?"
Mum - "None of his songs are original!"
Me - "AHA! Yes they are!"

She then shut up and went red... then told me to shut up although I was already quiet...

Oh, most definitely, Kevbo1987. There are casual fans, regular fans, diehard fans and then there are the fan boy/fan girls.

I also agree with Lilac Pilgrim...

I can't tell you the many times people told me that Al was "wrong" for parodying songs and should "write his own stuff". *clears throat* Al does write his own stuff (and we all know that) and the truth is, even his *PARODIES* are his own written works. Sure, they're poking at someone else's work, but Al wrote "Smells Like Nirvana." I'll tell you something, if Al were to parody one of *MY* songs, I would be both flattered and honored that he picked, say "Swimmer's Ballad" and turn it into something like "Slim-Fast Salad". Sure, it's a parody of my work, but it's a rite of passage and it's also a creative way of getting recognized and it's also somewhat of an indirect tribute to the artist you're parodying.

I was on the Yahoo! Music message boards and some weirdo said this (I can't remember everything but it was along these lines):

How can anyone seriously like [Weird Al Yankovic]? I only heard Smells Like Nirvana and it was so stupid what he said about them. I don't even listen to the rest of his music because of this...

I was pretty mad at her for that, because 1) You can't judge an artist on one song. 2) It was just a bit of fun! 3) She got her facts wrong later by saying that Nirvana hated Al for that song 4) She said Al was being mean to Nirvana which is really obviously not the intention

Then someone else said he HAS to ask permission for his parodies - which we know he doesn't, he's just polite - and that's a waste of time. Someone agreed and said he's not a real artist. I felt like writing something like this:

Wait a minute - not a real artist? As opposed to an imaginary one??

And what the hell are you doing on a Weird Al board if you despise the guy? Leave the fans in peace!

Sorry, I'll shut up now..... but it made me so mad!

That's why we have moderators to ban the trolls, Pilgrim. :P Seriously, stuff like that burps me up, too. Did I say burps, I meant burns.

Ack! This is evil - some Glasweigan (who I shall now track down) put Bad Hair Day in a list of gift ideas for people you dislike on Amazon.co.uk:

like someone's wacky uncle who thinks he's peter cook after being funny once, this swimming-pool-owning fraudster deserves a chibbin'.

That guy deserves a chibbin'! (Glasweigan slang for beating someone up, preferably to maim [if the injuries I've seen after neds giving people 'chibbin's' are anything to go by])

Delete my post if you wish, but I just want to let you know the guy really gave himself away and now I shall track him down for his disgusting list......

i have come across amny people who think that al is stupid in my life and i always jump to his defense. Very recently i met a guy through my cousin and we were talking and one night i mentioned that i really like weird al and he was like.. o if u are going to be with me u cant listen to weird al and i was lie why not and then he started telling me this story about some kid that was in his school that he made fun of who really liked weird al and wore shoes like als and he made fun of him for having a bit of a stuttering problem. after that i was like well if i had to choose between you and weird al i choose Al and he was like you are never going to meet al an saying its not like me and al are ever going to be together and it all made me quite mad.... to amke a long story short i am not talking to the jerk any more he wasnt that great of a person anyway and that is the most recent occasion that i have had to deal with weird al haters. And now i am happy and in quite a weird al watchingand listening mood

I remember an old friend telling me of how the despised Al because of this parody...of course, most of Al's stuff is varied and different and in good fun. This friend liked 2/3 chord songs that all sounded the same. So it doesn't hurt my feeling any.
