The Derailroaded DVD has just been release in England. It will be released in the US later on. But, if you can't wait to order it, the DVD is region free so it will work on your DVD player where ever you are. You can order it from http://plexi.greedbag.com/buy/derailroaded/
The email I recieved regarding the release states that there's 49 minutes of deleted scenes, INCLUDING "Weird Al" Yankovic singing the songs of Wild Man Fischer.
I just ordered mine. For those of you in the US that order from the UK, the 15 IS NOT dollars. I think my order totaled up to be 44 dollars. (Hey, I couldn't wait for the US release)
I got the DVD today and watched it. The sound from interview to interview was horrible, it went from really loud to barely audible, all over the place, and at times it felt like the producers were exploiting Larry trying to get him to say stuff or do stuff rather than be himself. But, put those two things aside, it was an okay documentary, and I did gain some respect for Larry, and his music, and got to see him as a real person, so I guess that was the point of the documentary and in that they succeeded.
If you're interested in it because you like Larry, or Barnes and Barnes, then it's probably worth picking up, but if you're only interested in it because of Al, it's probably worth skipping. He was barely in it, only twice, and the first time very briefly. He did have one interesting to say about Larry's reaction to hearing "I'll Be Mellow When I'm Dead" though. And Dr. Demento had a good story about Frank Zappa too.
There's an extra where Al sings some of "Merry-Go-Round" which is pretty interesting. Al does a good job of imitiating Larry's voice.
The part where he visits his aunt in the hospital left me feeling depressed.
He is doing well now, though. I spoke to him over the phone in February, and he seems to be alright. He told me he watches a lot of TV now days. Mostly game shows. He also told me he'd go back into show business if his brother managed his money. He's an interesting fellow, and I'm glad I got the DVD to learn more about his life.
Such a sad movie
I didn't really know much about Larry Fischer before I seen the movie....all i knew was that Frank Zappa had produced his first album but this movie really touched me. The man is a genius and i really wish now that he'd gotten the fame he deserved.
Al's part in the movie's pretty funny "NO LARRY I AM NOT TRYING TO KILL YOU!!!"
and the part with the puppets of Frank Zappa and Doctor D
so has anyone else seen it or am I just rambling to myself?
Edit: I guess for those who haven't seen it and have no intention of I may as well explain Al's part in the movie.
Larry Fischer was a paranoid Schizophrenic and when al released his first album Larry heard "I'll be mellow when I'm dead" on Dr D and misheard the line "Like wow man can you relate?" as "Like Wild man can you relate?" and thought Al was trying to kill him.
Al: "Like wow man can you relate?" do you mean "like wild man can you relate?" what's that mean? relate to what? be mellow when I'm dead? you trying to kill me?
