Maybe Al will show the "artistic expression" part of his interview with Em.

Maybe Al will perform Couch Potato.

That would be great, if only to see the obligatory Eminem cutaway shot where he gets all mad. It would also ensure the fact that Al would get mentioned on Em's next CD.

Not to be cynical, but there is about as much chance of Al performing on the VMAs as there is Elvis Presley performing a duet with Frank Sinatra on the same night! For two reasons:

1) MTV has a good relationship with Eminem. Seeing as Eminem's the biggest thing around since Nirvana and also seeing as Eminem wasn't entirely pleased with the idea of Al's parody, I don't think MTV would want to risk their relationship with Em by letting Al perform.

2) The much bigger reason: Couch Potato was not a commercial hit by any means! The album did okay compared to the many of Al's albums, but let's be realistic here. Al has had much bigger hits with Eat It, LAS, Fat, SLN, and Amish Paradise, but has never been asked to perform at the VMAs, even when SLN was nominated for an award! Why on earth would they want to have him perform, when he doesn't currently have a video playing on their station or a widely successful album to promote. It's just not going to happen.

The most we can hope for is to see a shot of Al sitting in the audience laughing at one of Chris Rock's jokes. Sorry to burst any bubbles, including my own! Maybe next time Al will parody someone who is a little more realistic about his own "legacy" as an artist.

I agree completely Bruce, but a girl can dream can't she?

I don't know where you get that from. Have we seen/heard/read anything that would say that? I know he didn't want Al to do the video, and Al complied with his wishes. What's to be unhappy about? I'm sure he's cashing the royalty checks with no problem.

And as far as Al actually doing anything at the VMA, I think we all know we are playing with the idea. If Al was on the schedule, I think we would have read about it at The Mothership.

I was infering based on what we know. He may have allowed the song to be recorded, but by not allowing a video or a single (even though Volcano doesn't do that anyway) he basically prevented the general public from hearing the song. If Eminem liked the parody, he would have let it get attention.

You know, there is another possibility.

Maybe, as a recording artist who recently released an album, Al just decided not to schedule a show that day in case he was asked to present an award or something. I think that's the most likely scenario.

That would be my guess, especially since he booked many of the concert dates before he knew if the album would be a hit, actually before he even knew if the album would be out in time for the tour!

It's also real possible that he just wants to attend. It is his industry, after all. And a chance to catch up with some friends.
