why did your dad think a weird al polka was bad? :dontgetit: :dontgetit: :dontgetit:
Dr. Dad? How do you feel about the intersection of Al's polkas with the tender young ears that are under your guidance?

HHHMMM.......my dad probably thinks that his polkas are stupid and that Weird Al is a freak, but that doesnt matter. He is an old timer that listens to country music. What can I say?

Censorship Of Al For The Kiddoes?

Post by Dr_Dad »

But what am I saying. We have a voice of experience on this board. Dr. Dad? How do you feel about the intersection of Al's polkas with the tender young ears that are under your guidance?

*shifting in his chair*

Well, first of all, for those who don't know, my kiddoes include a son age 12, and two daughters ages 8 and 7 [I've also got an almost-16-year-old daughter who, I'm afraid, would sooner listen to 24 hours of Lawrence Welk and Yanni than Al, I'm afraid  ... and you should HEAR the "music" (using the term loosely) that comes out of her room!!] These three however are true Al fans -- just check this out!

Most of the time I have very little concern about what AL songs they listen to. I mean, compared to Eminem and most rap artists, Al is incredibly benign [another reason I admire the man]. Anyway, they don't listen to much to the polkas, so it's not much of a concern. If they did hear, say, the "Closer" part of "The Alternative Polka", they probably laugh at the sound effects, and not even understand it's actually a BLEEP! Also, to a 7 or 8 [or even 12, to a degree] year old, hearing the words "Do me, baby" or "My sweet cherry pie" means nothing to them [or at least it means NOT what it means to us].

The PG-13 jokes ["self-service pumps"; "gets to keep the tip"; "if I could make love to a bottle"] tend also to go right over their head -- they just think it's more funny lyrics. Now, I will say, a very few songs like parts of "Melanie" ["I saw her in the shower reaching for some soap"], of "Jerry Springer" ["the show/With the hermaphrodite, the slut, and the crack ho"] and of "Good Old Days" ["I'll never forget the day I smashed in his head"] I don't let the younger ones listen to. But my 12-year-old thinks they're a hoot -- because he understands it's all a joke [the younger ones though might not]. But even the younger ones get the joke in other songs, like "One More Minute" ... "he's really mad at that lady" they say, laughing and knowing Al wouldn't really want to "dive into a swimming pool filled with double edged razor blades".

The bottom line is this. You need to know your kids, and to be sensitive to thinking about what they might misunderstand. I'm blessed with good happy well-rounded kids who like a good gag like anyone else. But they also know what's right and what's wrong. It's like when they laugh when someone farts on TV. They know it's inappropriate, and that they'd get into trouble if they did it for real -- but, when it's all said and done, a well-timed fart CAN be pretty funny. There are limits, of course [I don't even let the 12 year old watch, say, "South Park"], but in general, your best bet is to be with your kids as often as you can. Know what they like, teach them what's right, and they'll handle the rest.

That's why I tolerate some of what my eldest listens to -- I know she's listening to it simply for the enjoyment of the music and not because the lyrics are "telling her to be evil". I don't fear she's going to get corrupted by the music she hears, because I've laid a good foundation in her from the start. Now, that's not to say I don't put my 27 cents in about it now and then, but we know where we stand, and we respect each other and our opinions.

Heck, I remember when my younger brother in the late seventies told my fairly conservative father he really wanted a copy of a new song out on 45 called "You Sexy Thing" by Hot Chocolate!! He nearly had a heart attack that his 10 year old would want a song with a "terrible" title like that! I told him, I'd heard the song on the radio before, and it wasn't as bad as the title made it out to be. He listened to it, and agreed it seemed innocuous enough. In fact, a favorite memory of have of my dad [and yes, he's still with us yet] is him mocking the song in front of my brother, singing "I believe in MIR-KLES!!" [if you've heard the song, you know why that's sounds funny ...].

Okay, I've taken up far too much cyberspace already, so I'll just end it here. Let's hear from any other parental units, and I know we got others! Patti? Vikki? Ali? Give a shout-out, y'all!!

You might try telling your daughter that she can SAVE TIME by listening to Al, who has points of resemblance with both those worthy gentlemen.

After all, Yanni has long hair.

And Lawrence Welk was a musician.

--OE, who alarmed her mother by playing "The Sound Of Silence" LP (which has two songs about people committing suicide) nonstop the summer I was 15. Well, I'm still here, and still listening to Simon and Garfunkel.

Dr. Dad--I couldn't have put it better myself, and kudos to you for being such an involved and in-tune Dad! My kids are older than yours (19, 17, 17 and 11) and I must admit that there were a few times I squirmed in my seat while playing Al videos or cds with the entire family without having screened them first because my youngest was present, and probably about age 8 or 9 at the time. But overall I'm very impressed with Al for keeping things wholesome.

So, welcome to our new friend sheldon069, and maybe your dad will someday give Al another chance--he's not so bad, dad!

P.S. Dr. Dad--Loved the "I believe in MIR-KLES!" story!

Actually weird al said that he has been releasing new age music under the name Yanni for years. he said it started off as a joke, but people are actually buying the records, so he decided to keep doing it. It's in the ask Al archives somewhere, where someone asked if Al would release an album under a different name like Garth Brooks did with his Chris Gaines album.

[funny side note- a while back I wore a Weird Al shirt to class and my meteorology teacher said 'do you think anybody at this school would wear a Yanni T-shirt? They probably would get beat up.' He said he thought of that because he glanced at my shirt and just saw the Ya for yankovic and though of Yanni. He said he didn't mind Yanni's music but just didn't like his moustache. Hmm, long hair and moustache, and their names both start with 'yan.'

-also, lawrence welk did polka.

Well, Dr. Dad, you wanted me to chime in on this topic, so here goes. I have two boys. One is 20 and the other 13. The 20 year old, Derek, is a special needs child who can't speak and is wheelchair bound. I really don't have to worry about playing any of Al's music in fornt of him since he can't really comment on it or anything. But he does like it! He smiles and hums *he can't talk, but he does make vocal sounds* when he hears Al's music, and really likes it when I sing to him. Marshall is my 13 year old. We went to see Al in concert together when he was 10. We had a wonderful time! I've listened to all Al's cd's in front of him for the past three or four years, and he really isn't affected by any of the lyrics from the songs you mentioned. The kid likes Eminem, but even if he sings one of his songs, he'll censor himself. *He does not own any Eminem cds, however.* But you know they hear music on the radio or at a friends house. Marshall won't always admit he likes Al *not in front of his friends* but he will just start singing one of Al's songs out of the blue once in a while. He's a good kid, and I think he's pretty well adjusted. I think he mostly just thinks Al is funny, and doesn't think about lyrics too much. Ok, anyone else? Good topic!

All in all, Al's stuff is pretty wholesome, and when it isn't it's usually derived from the original stuff. And as OE has observed, Al's take on it usually takes the wind out of the original instead of glorifying it.

At least Al won't have to do the two-faced double take... you know the artists and actors who stand nobly on the first amendment until they realize that their children might actually see/hear the garbage they have been purveying... Then they move on to more family friendly fare. :dontgetit:

We don't know that yet. Al might consider albums 1-10 songs he doesn't want his children to hear (I mean, he called RWS "edgy" after all), and "Poodle Hat" could be Barney meets the Telletubbies.

Eh, not likely.

In a duel to the death, perhaps?

I don't know how Al's music could get much more family friendly unless he jumps on the celebrity bandwagon and records a Lullabye Album.

Actually, I would love that... :choon:
