Ok, I'd like to add my 27 cents to this thread. I'm very thankful for Al. Last year was a very rough year for me. I lost my daughter, and Al's music really helped to ease the pain of that loss. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to thank him in person for his music, and for helping me through that time with it. A world without Al would be really boring! Thanks, Al, for being so wonderful and for making April 27, 2002 one of the happiest days of my life!

Although this is an old topic, the thought will never go out of
style.
Just last night, on the way home from work, I was thinking about the lift the Poodle Hat cover gave to me. I remember how completely dynamic, charismatic and captivating the shows have been, and it just takes me to a special place of complete happiness.
Of course Al makes me laugh, but it goes much deeper than that. He makes me glow. My friends probably think I'm *star struck*, but that's not it. There is a feeling of connectedness that is total magic. It's not just what music is about, it's what the best part of life is about.
Al makes my life exponentially richer (bless his pointy li'l head).

You don't have to say you're sorry for getting sappy about Al HERE! You can even drool if you want to, but you have to do that under the corresponding topic.
I don't think that feeling of connectedness is an illusion. I believe Al has an underlying respect for his fans as people that changes the nature of his contacts with them.
Even something as small as that 27 on the scout's sleeve on the new album cover... a joke that originated with fans years ago, and Al's still going with it.

he has also given me a brighter outlook on life which some people are actually jealous of (or "of which some people are actually jealous!").
I have tried & tried & tried for years to figure out what the mesmerizing appeal is about Al, and I still don't have a clue. I'm sure groups like these
have a lot to do with it, but if other people don't understand, it really is
their loss.
What we love about Al isn't the kind of stuff that goes away, which is why
I have on my license plate rim "Weird Al Yankovic...Fan for Life".

The things I like about Weird Al... (in no particular order)
I admire him for what he has accomplished in his career. He is a guy who carved out a niche for himself in a business that is very tough. He went from being a kid sending 39 cent tapes in to Dr. Demento to being the 800 lb gorilla of "Novelty" music. He still manages to rub shoulders with pop performers, and while his musicianship isn't taken as seriously as I would like, he is still viewed as part of that world. Look at his appearances on the gazillion VH1 shows he has appeared on.
I also admire that he did what he wanted to. He believed in himself long before very many other people did. In fact, the only example that I know of from his life that he let others direct him was in his choice of educational direction, and I suspect that was only because he saw the value in an education.
I admire that he manages to have people work with him year after year, project after project. The fact that the people who know him best stick with him says alot about who he really is.
I admire his work ethic. While he doesn't seem to believe that there are projects that are beneath him (the Chicken Dance) he does recognize that there are jobs that are not worthy of him (the Beer Commercial contract he turned down.) In my opinion, his albums have been consistently better and better since he "took the reins" and started producing too. Not that Rick Derringer didn't to a great job, but Al really understands "Weird Al" and the "Weird Al" fans.
I admire the fact that he has chosen to go through life stone cold sober. And still manages to be happy. He seems to get his highs from just being alive and the joy he brings to people. Remember he came of age in a time that to not do drugs was "Weird." Maybe that's one reason his dorm mates called him that...
What I have learned about him leads me to believe that this is a man who has strength of character, integrity, and he is someone who knows what honor is all about. Those things are in pretty short supply, and I suspect even more so in his zip code.
I admire him because he is smart, funny and very flexible (both literally and figuratively.) And because he is so available to his fans. The thousands of fan/Al pictures out there are testament to that, not to mention the stories of the fans themselves.
And yeah, SquirrellyGirl, he makes me happy. In a way that I can't quite understand or try to tell anyone about.
That and the writhing and mic licking.

P. S. One thing I love about Al fans is that, I think, they have an above average intellect and above average heart. (Their sense of humor ain't too shabby, either.)

He definately had to grow into his looks. It seems to me he gets better looking every year. Some day he's gonna be the best looking octogenarian around! Not to mention he looks good for his age. I don't see many people that are 43 and definitely don't look it.

If you faint, don't you miss all the fun?
