First time I heard Daft Punk was Da Funk, and wow, that was earlier than I thought. I thought it was closer to the 00s, but yeah, it's more mid 90s. Huh.

But that seems out of the usual for anything Al would do (As a style parody anyway....Get Lucky still could be a parody target), plus I don't think they really qualify as a "dig deeper" band anymore.

I like the Pavement suggestion though. Wilco's another one that's probably up there on that list......

I would LOVE a Darling Buds or Lush style parody. Lush isn't necessarily obscure, but they are a "dig deeper" band for sure. "Genius, silly, and lovable"? I'd say so, but are they one of the most influential bands of the 90s?

I'm still waiting for a Garbage style parody (or Curve or Lulabox, whatever you fancy).

Actually, re-reading Oswalt's tweets, why COULDN'T it be The Pixies? He doesn't say it's a 90's band, he says he's been a fan of the band SINCE the 90's. He could have discovered them late.

As for Patton, we know he's a fan of the PIxies. Here's a quote from him in GQ magazine:

<....when I was at college I saw the Pixies opening for Love And Rockets on the Doolittle tour. The Pixies come out and they're just hopping around the stage, messing with the crowd and Black Francis played so hard he broke a string. An amazing show. Then Love And Rockets come stomping out, plant their feet, do their Earth, Sun, Moon album in order - the one with "So Alive" on it - march off, came back, did "No New Tale To Tell" and march off. No banter, nothing - they clearly hated each other. Then the band broke up. Couple of years later, Pixies come back to the Vault in Washington DC touring Trompe Le Monde with Pere Ubu were opening up. Pere Ubu were loving every second of it. Pixies march out, plant their feet, do Trompe Le Mondein order, march off, march back on, do "Monkey Gone to Heaven", march off, show's over. So the Doolittle tour would have been 1989...close enough. Could have been Oswalt's first time seeing them and they converted him into a fan that night.

Sure, this is all speculation. . .but this is the speculation thread, after all.

Another thing to consider, if this IS a Pixies pastiche, it wouldn't be shocking if Amanda Palmer's cameo has her subbing for Kim Deal's vocals on spoofs of songs like 'Gigantic".

He says both that he's been a fan since the '90s and that they're "one of the MOST influential, MOST respected 90s outfits." I don't think it's impossible that he would describe the Pixies that way, but it's enough to make me skeptical, especially since we know he's been a fan since at least 1989.

Looking over his quotes again, some confusion is setting in...is this a parody or a style parody? I assumed the latter, because of the "celebrating their whole catalog" line, and the "dig deeper" part. But everything else makes it sound as though this is an actual parody of an actual song. Have any 90s icons had a recent hit that Al might have tackled? Or did he perhaps take on a vintage track?

Another bit of semi-baseless speculation to ponder--is this perhaps a special polka (ala "The Hot Rocks Polka")? Would a medley of songs from the past 2-3 years really merit both Patton and Bermuda calling it the best polka ever? Al's at the end of a record deal, and if he moves away from traditional albums, this could potentially (tragically) mean no more polkas, since if he's releasing songs one at a time on iTunes, the royalty situation of a polka may not really be cost-effective. Did Al decide to close out polkas with a bang by finally doing the all-Beatles (or all-Zeppelin) polka?

Pearl Jam was also a huge often overlooked band frm the 90's that may be the target, as well they have recently had success with their new album "lightning bolt" im banking on a pearl jam parody or pastiche
