Hmm, good question! o.o
As far back as I remember, Al has always said he's been a vegetarian since 1992:
“Many years ago I found out something about hamburgers that really grossed me out. You may not know this, so I hope I don’t make you sick, but it turns out hamburgers are actually made out of dead cows. I am not making this up. Needless to say, as soon as I discovered that, I gave up meat entirely." -Al
(rofl XD)
His being a vegan is still kinda new to me (but AWESOME 'cause... who's also got a vegan diet and opposable thumbs? *points to self* THIS GAL!), but he seems to be a "mostly vegan", i.e., he's not so strict in the "no dairy" department.
“I am still a vegetarian, and I try to be a vegan, but I occasionally cheat,” Yankovic said. “If there’s a cheese pizza on the band bus, I might sneak a piece.” -Al
(source: this interview here!: http://vegetarianstar.com/2011/06/02/we ... an-rumors/)
You see, unlike me, he doesn't go "NUUUU!! *sign of the cross with fingers*" at dairy products now and then.
Although I still remember his favorite breakfast is a "raspberry Muesli with vanilla soy milk", sometimes he just can't escape a meal with dairy in it, like the odd pizza during touring and stuff (see above!).
Also, think about it... wouldn't it have been super rude and UN-Al-like to go "EW CREAM CHEESE FROSTING? I'M A VEGAN, DUDES." on Cupcake Wars?
Yeah.
Al being a good sport and knowing how... not-easy it is to make vegan cupcakes (for most bakers). <3
So, short and short of it:
Al: Strict vegetarian, yes-- but vegan... most of the time. ;D

Re: Al on Food Network's "Cupcake Wars"
I thought it was really strange that they would offer squid and herring when the guest judge was a vegetarian. Big failure on the part of the show's producers. You'd think if you work for the Food Network you'd be considerate of your talent's dietary restrictions. Instead they made Al look rude to have a special cupcake made for him. There are plenty of other "weird foods" they could have used.
I couldn't tell a dirt clod from a plate of caviar.

Okra comes to mind. Broccoli would have actually had an Al reference included.

I just finished watching this, and...

OH MY GOD!!!
I usually can't stand watching Cupcake Wars, but OMG!! I LOVED this episode so so much for the #1 obvious reason: Al's presence!
OMG HE WAS SO ADORABLE AND GORGEOUS AND-- AND AFJDKFJSKLBJKLJDSFL;DSJ;F
I STRONGLY beg to differ from a commentator here who said Al looked 'bored' during the whole thing- he was expressive, involved and just so sweet and (of course) funny throughout the show and looked really happy to be there!
(AND THE MUSTACHE IS BAAAACK. 8D)
ROFL did you see the way he hugged Justin (the host)?! LEG HUG! XD
I cracked up too when he was instructed to tell the bakers to calmly hurry up 'cause they only had 90 mins left to finish up their 1,000 cupcakes and display stand and he was like... "90 MINUTES!! RUN!! BAKE LIKE THE WIIIIIND!!!!"
And... "This cupcake...makes me want to throw up... so I can taste it again. XD"
He was so warm toward the bakers, awww! ;.;
That was... odd, but not really the producers' fault.
They probably didn't realize Al was a vegetarian when they were planning the 'weird' ingredients, and it was also a slip by one of the bakers of her not knowing of Al's vegetarianism either.
Bless her, that bit of squid was a huge mistake on her part and she must've felt so embarrassed! ;_; Al was really sweet about it, though.
But...back to spazzing-
HOLY AMISH PARADISE HE'S SO CUTE OMG SO CUTE SO CUTE SO CUTE HGDFJGHHFDSKLFJAKL;FA;AA!!!!
HE IS JUST SO ADORABLE.
I melted when he hugged the winning baker, awwww!!
Al is just sweeter than any cupcake could ever HOPE to be.
...*hopes she didn't scare anyone*

Re: Al on Food Network's "Cupcake Wars"
Did they give the contestants a heads-up that they would be baking for Al's book signing? They seemed to be aware of some pretty obscure songs ("Waffle King," "Grapefruit Diet") but at the same time none of them came across as huge fans, so I was kind of surprised to see those songs referenced.

I am pretty sure I'd be willing to become a vegetarian just to avoid eating a squid cupcake.

I need a hook up too! Turns out the Food Network in Canada (same round red logo as the U.S.) stopped carrying Cupcake Wars after Season 6... who knew?? So something else aired instead and I couldn't see the show...Jigawatt wrote:I may be able to hook something up...
