Comedy Central Special, DVD/Blu-Ray Release

Post by TMBJon »

How do you think this live performance will be different from the Live DVD and special that aired last time? Do you think it will be a straight live concert performance, or will there be any mockumentary aspects as well? How will the TV special be different from the DVD/BD release other than length? Bonus features?

It would be awesome if there was some mockumentary aspect, or at least some behind the scenes of a Weird Al concert which I've always wanted to see. As for bonus features, a live commentary track from Al over the entire concert has the potential to be really enlightening. And it would be great to get Perform This Way and White & Nerdy on Blu-Ray since they were shot in HD and have yet to be released outside of the Internet.

Comedy Central Special, DVD/Blu-Ray Release

Post by minnick27 »

Well the PTW is most assuredly on there. Al did say he was looking at a BluRay release, this fits nicely. I think the biggest difference in the two discs is the setlist though. As far as mockumentary, I don't want it. I would love behind the scenes, but doubt we will get much if any of that. I know Al is a comic, but I like when he does stuff straight, he gives sooo much info. Commentary would be sweet.

I would love to see some aspect of a mockumentary, namely some behind the scenes features. As someone mentioned previously, it would be pretty cool to get a look at what the backstage area is like during the costume changes. A commentary would be beyond awesome. If there is a Blu-Ray release, it would only make sense to include the Perform This Way and White and Nerdy videos. The Polkaface video is another possibility, given the fact that it's already premiered in concert. I do think this will be pretty similar to the last live DVD, though I don't mind that at all.

To me, the term "mockumentary" brings to mind the Disney Channel special from the Bad Hair Tour because it involved silly sketches with Al in between concert clips. I'm thinking this Comedy Central special will turn out more like that one but with some edgier sketches. I'm still not sure why Comedy Central would want to just show a straight concert of his all the way through or just straight behind the scenes material. It might clash with a lot of their "mature" programming. Believe me, I'm glad they're giving him some more media exposure and it's nice that they see Al as more than just a family friendly guy with limited appeal, but this is going to take some getting used to.

I'm sure the videos for PTW, W&N and Polka Face videos will turn up on the DVD if the last one was any indication. After all, either Al or Bermuda must have said that they were looking at the possibility of a Blu Ray release for ALL the Alpocalypse videos. This would be better than just a separate Blu Ray disc with those two plus the videos that were on the album's DVD. They should also consider including the videos for "Trapped In The Drive Thru" and "Do I Creep You Out" because then every singel one of his music videos will have some physical release (although it wouldn't make much sense seeing as those two songs weren't even performed).

There's going to be an Alpocalypse special on Comedy Central featuring the concert filmed in Toronto on July 16. I do know that the Comedy Central show is going to be the concert edited down into a 1 Hour special, which should be around 46 mins with commercials. The DVD, not sure if it is going to also have a Blu-Ray release, although I would assume that it's a good possibility, is going to feature the full concert in a 1.5 Hour or so length. This, I assume, would of course, edit out the in-between videos. That should definitely feature the whole show, though. For the TV special, I would guess the medley would be edited out, as well as possibly one of the previous alternating songs (You Make Me, You Don't Love Me Anymore or Franks 2000" TV). If I could choose, I think You Make Me, You Don't Love Me Anymore would work out better, since it has the "Sorry" transition for the song. I could see one of the classics, perhaps Amish Paradise being dropped. I'm pretty sure that it will include the Alpocalypse songs.

For the extra features on the DVD, I'm guessing there's going to be some kind of feature From The Fans, since they were interviewing different people throughout the day and night about Al's concerts. The videos are probably pretty likely, especially if the DVD has a Blu-Ray release. I think it would make more sense to stick the Blu-Ray versions on this instead of a whole separate release. I wouldn't expect more than PTW and White & Nerdy if this happens. Also, perhaps some behind the scenes stuff, including maybe some of the rehearsal from Al-Stormtroopers-Cheerleaders, backstage stuff and probably some pics from throughout the day.

It would be a HUGE disappointment if this were not released on Blu-Ray. Also there's no way he'll drop Amish Paradise, one of his most recognizable hits.

Well, I guess let's make this a question then:

For the 45 minutes on the Comedy Central special, what songs would you edit out? That's about half of the regular concert. So, in promoting Alpocalypse, which songs do you keep for the special?

I'm not even sure if the medley, Franks and Amish makes up for enough. I could see other cuts being Let Me Be Your Hog, Canadian Idiot, possibly another alternating song. They could also considering airing an edited down version of the medley, so that you still get Whatever You Like and Another Tattoo. I guess it actually comes down to in promotion for your new album, do you want to feature all the songs you perform from it on the special, or do you want to feature mainly your classics with a couple new songs?

I think the Comedy Central special setlist will be like this:
Polka Face, TMZ, Smells Like Nirvana, Skipper Dan, Party in the CIA, CNR, Wanna B Ur Lovr, Amish Paradise, Craigslist, Perform This Way, White & Nerdy, Fat, Yoda. If there's time for more, Canadian Idiot or The Saga Begins.

If they include all seven of the Alpocalypse songs performed in full in the TV-edit, then that adds up to about 27 minutes worth of content already. (No, really! The cumulative runtime of the studio versions of those tracks is 26 and a half minutes!) That only leaves about 20 minutes for the hits and classics. Yoda alone is about eight minutes long now with the Yoda Chant.

Edit: TMBJon's proposed setlist (minus TSB and CI) would be about 54 minutes long. If they cut out Yoda too, though, we'd have our golden 46 minutes. Still, it'd be a shame not to have any of the encore.
