I love both of these songs!
For anyone who's never read them, or heared the first and/or second demo version of Stop Draggin My Car Around, here's the alternate lyrics:
I was doing over 60 in the fast lane
Guess I must have hit some broken glass
Had a blowout and I started swerving
Tried to pull over but I ran out of gas
Yeah, I was stranded, I was blocking traffic
I had to run and call the Tripple A
Got back in time to see the highway patrol
And, they were towing my car away
These were replaced with the part of the song that starts with these lyrics (I dont think posting the full verse is necessary)
Took my baby to the local disco
I was jumpin' like a maniac

I never knew there was a different verse for Stop Draggin...'!
I think Al made the right choice by putting in the disco verse. I still always find it funny to think of a car being towed for esthetic reasons. Especially if you know anything about the too-cool-for-words disco culture of the '80's.
That's right, children, they thought they were cool.

"Weird Al" has a charisma that's all his own. The awkward, the misshapen, the socially inept flock to his banner.

two songs about cars.Mad Genius @ Jan 11 2004, 01:23 PM wrote: I've been doing some observing while listening to Belvedere Cruising and Stop Draggin' my car around and I've noticed something:
on Belvedere Cruising, Al sings "...Going Belvedere cruising today. I can take you anywhere on my 1964 Belvedere! Going Belvedere cruising today!"
and on Stop Draggin' My Car Around Al sings "...Now I'm at home, I'm watching Gilligan's Island, guess it's time to trade my old car in. For twenty dollars and my '64 Plymouth, maybe I can get a second-hand Swhin."
I think he's inadvertently mentioning his parents' 1964 Plymouth Belvedere being towed away on Stop Draggin' My Car Around
Tell me what you think.
That's all I got.

If you're not watching, you're doing yourself great injustice.

It helps if you know that his parents really did have a 1964 Plymouth Belvedere (which they sent away to college with Al in the late 70's-- they must have been really careful about the scheduled maintenance and regular oil changes!). Yeah, I think both songs are about the same car.
