Typically an artist will have it in their contract that they get a supply of promotional copies (that is, copies that have the barcode scratched out to prevent it from being sold) of each release.

I'm pretty sure that when Al sent me a signed copy of Poodle Hat when I was in the hospital (along with some other stuff), it was promotional. The barcode on the CD had a hole in in.

Neat! Actually, if it weren't for a certain severe medical incident when I was thirteen, I probably wouldn't be as madly into Al as I am now. When I was sick, I made my family buy me all his records while I lie in the hospital bed. Had I known I could've gotten a free signed copy out of my suffering, I might have looked into that.

Hey, so, um.... it might just be the stupid musician album release nerd in me talking but, based on the Twitter image, is that a digi-pak that his album is in? There's something about that package that I really, really dig. It'd make the CD even cooler if it was contained within that slick, unbreakable format.

Yeah, it's a digipak, or whatever they call those things. Did I forget to mention that? Oopsie!
