Re: Next Lead Single
Oddaustin, Gaga's next album (and single) is called "Reloaded". Some guy at our flea market had a stack of them. :-P

Correction: It wasn't Shania Twain, it was John Michael Montgomery and "Sold"; still overkill when he wasn't that big of a star. Although, Shania is probably Cledus' Michael Jackson.minnick27 wrote:Take Cledus T Judd. His second album had two Shania Twain parodies.adaniels42 wrote: Second, I think it has to be Gaga. Personally I don't know why there is an unwritten rule that he can't polka and parody somebody. If his albums are like "time capsules" then Gaga almost has to be a big target on this album. People who don't know much about pop culture still know who Gaga is so I find the parody/polka treatment suitable.

And here's my confusion with this argument -- Lady Gaga can't be on both a parody and polka.adaniels42 wrote:Yeah, it's a double-dip...but I think it would be a warranted one, you know? I feel like Gaga is the only artist now who warrants the polka/parody treatment if you know what I mean.
But, I'm Slim Shady. Yes, I'm the real Shady. And all the other Shadys are just imitating. So won't all the other Slim Shadys please stand up? Please stand up. Please stand up.
(Did Eminem really warrant both a parody and polka? Discuss)

No, it was Shania Twain. Any Man of Mine and If Your Not In It For Love. And I did mention the two JMM songs, just not by name or artist

Re: Next Lead Single
I agree, mostly. I agree about Couch Potato. Crap song, shouldn't have been a lead parody, and if anything should've been an "extra" type track, given away for free on things like iTunes.weirdojace wrote:Couch Potato was such a smurf song, I don't know what compelled Al to think that was the right choice for a lead parody.
You're right though... the success of the album all boils down Al choosing the right parody. Alapalooza's should have been Bedrock Anthem. RWS' should have been Rabbi or Pentiums, and PH's should have been eBay.
Of course it also wouldn't hurt to, y'know, make a video to more than one song for once. (Yeah yeah, he has the animated stuff, I know. But those don't do nearly as well as the live action stuff. Did any of those animated videos even get airplay besides Al-TV?)
I always thought that The Saga Begins worked well as a lead parody. American Pie is such a widely known song, and Episode 1 was primed to be a huge movie. I remember seeing the video a lot actually, on different music oriented stations. I don't know how Rabbi would've worked as a 'lead' off single. The song is funny, but the original song is just as funny, and the video too. To try and improve on that, I don't know. "Pentiums" probably would've been the best way to go, but it worked as a secondary release.
I agree about them making more videos. But, what with MTV pretty much banning ALL videos, and VH1 limiting it to only a Top 20 style countdown twice a week, well, to spend all the money on videos that'll never get shown on a national network seems pointless and a waste of money. But, if they did it like they did for Lynwood, and made videos for each song, and releasing it as a cd/dvd combo for like, $30 would be the best way. They could do a mix of animation and live action. I think it was CKY who did something like that too. You could buy just the cd, or the dvd (video album), and the deluxe pack which had both. YouTube is a great marketing thing. Videos are the best way to go for Al.

I think getting music videos on TV is less important these days, cause as you said they barely play them anymore. The easier and seemingly only way to get a video known is to have it go viral on the net.

Re: Next Lead Single
If getting your videos on TV were important, Al wouldn't have much of a career right now. Even discounting the fact that MTV / VH1 almost never shows videos anymore, even in the 80's and 90's when they did, Al's videos only ever got very limited rotation outside of the AlTV specials. The limited airtime he would get on MTV however was still leaps and bounds better then anything he gets or has gotten on any terrestrial radio station that's not the Dr. Demento show. I don't think there's a terrestrial radio station left in the country that has played anything by Weird Al since Ronald Reagan was president

Tomato, why can't Lady Gaga be both a parody and a polka? She's second to Barack Obama on Twitter followers and arguably the biggest thing in music right now. I really don't see it as a faux pa if she gets parodied and polka'd.
Let's not forget that other artists, although not parodied and polka'd on the same have album have gotten this treatment...ie....Madonna, Backstreet Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Green Day.
As for Eminem, I guess it doesn't really matter cause it happened anyway, but he was an iconic rapper at that time and his recent revival in music doesn't hurt why he got the polka/parody treatment.

Re: Next Lead Single
The point of my post was that it seems absurd to let Eminem get a free pass having both a parody and a polka on the album, when Lady Gaga, like it or not, has basically changed music for the next few years -- Everybody's being weird for the sake of weird. (I apologise for the awkward reply... I guess I read your post wrong.)adaniels42 wrote:Tomato, why can't Lady Gaga be both a parody and a polka? And also, by the Twitter followers logic, he should do a parody of whatever Briney Spears' latest song is, considering she has more followers than Lady Gaga. Or we can wait for Ashton Kutcher to release a song.
(PS I hope Ashton Kutcher doesn't release a song. Ever.)
