I've read that article several times. It makes me so upset that I don't even bother to tell you guys.

That was pretty bad. Self-proclaimed prince of parody? Since when? I've met Al, and he is far from being creepy!! What morons!! Just another one of those articles written by people whose only taste is in their mouths.

4 words that Al said to me that blew me away:

"How's Problem Child doing?" - 7/12/11

I read this article ages ago, and I admit, it did make me think "what kind of guy is Al really?" but that was before I found the forum, and well before I met Al. I know for certain that the eagerness he displayed when I met him was not a put on job. These guys are either completely making it up, or misquoting and exaggerating the event. I am ashamed to say that I momentarily took it seriously and allowed it to waver my fandom, but now I know what Al is really like, and I'm not going to let any internet article thingy majig spoil my visions of my idol ever again.

You can never trust what you read, especially on the Internet..

Unless you're at WOWAY, of course.

Well, that is assuming you're not talking to me...

GAH! I just reread it! And they called SLN a rip off! And do they really expect Al to be super excited when eating dinner? Is a guy not allowed to stare at his plate thoughtfully? And these guys have obviously never even listened to a Weird Al CD! They misquoted Al as saying that only his new CD had originals on it!

That's the real harm that comes from a piece like this one-- Al gets seen by people who have never met him in person through this distorted funhouse-mirror of a couple of guys who believe that three pitchers of beer are needed to achieve true excellence in humor.

The people who have met him begin to realize that he's much more sensitive-- and sensible-- than you'd think if you just saw him cutting bloodily into his own arm with a big fakey stage knife or singing about the tragedy of leprosy. If you meet him with warmth & respect, you get the same back. If you do not (as these guys did not), you will at least nearly always get politeness, but Al's not always a sufficiently good actor offstage to completely disguise his lack of enthusiasm. Even in print articles, you can tell the difference between an interview where the interviewer has done his or her homework and Al lights up & often says something interesting or new. Meeting with a positive response just vivifies him. And then there's the other kind, where he settles for dutifully serving up the standard press-kit boilerplate.
"Weird Al" has a charisma that's all his own. The awkward, the misshapen, the socially inept flock to his banner.

There was enough discussion on this so I split it into it's own topic.

These two guys may have said some other things or acted in a certain manner that seemed rude. Also, due to the fact it was before the show, maybe Al was trying to collect himself. As a pitcher (okay, I don't pitch under the same pressure as professionals, but it still requires concentrating) and someone who has performed, you're not exactly jumping all over the place. You're trying to get yourself ready.

The questions were bad as well. These men had no idea who Al was. He doesn't drink, he does not accept parody ideas, and you're taking small shots at what loves to do (saying he's not at all original later on doesn't help). If you're going to do an interview, study up on the person a bit!

That said, making a judgement within such a small time frame is silly. Al would probably be in a better mood in a calmer setting and when he doesn't have to go out and perform real soon.

I've never heard Al proclaim himself a "prince of parody." That's something popular culture has labeled him.

Bad interviewers=bad interview.
