UHF in HD Now Available

Post by spmahn »

Not sure if this has been posted, but I was just flipping through the HD on Demand selection on my Comcast cable, and one of the movies offered on the Free HD Movies channel this month is UHF. My HD set is older and only does 1080i, but from the looks of it, the film didn't really look a whole lot better here than it does on a DVD player that's being upscaled. When it comes to older movies like this, it's usually hit or miss in regards to whether or not it gets improved by HD. Usually the more popular titles get a complete remaster and end up looking phenomenal on Blu Ray or HD, while something like UHF would likely just get get a quick transfer, and the improvement will be minimal at best.

I know Al said that when they were working on DVD, they did transfer the film so it could be released in an HD format some day, so whoever supplies Comcast with content is likely taking it from the source at MGM. Perhaps this also means we'll be seeing a Blu-Ray release before the end of the year?

Are you sure that Comcast is getting the transfer directly from MGM? It's also plausible (in fact, probable) that they would have done their own in-house transfer from the standard definition DVD print, which would explain why it didn't look so hot.

Well I can only speculate, but further inspection shows that the movie was offered as a part of Comcast HD's Impact on Demand movie service, and from the looks of their website http://www.impactvod.com/, their content is supplied directly by MGM, so I can only assume that the HD version of UHF they are offering is coming from the original HD master that was created in 2002.

MGM has its own HD cable channel in the UK, and "UHF" is airing there this month as well.
