Well, people don't want to have to do research to understand a song. They just want to listen to it and that's it. I'll research him though.
Guess what!

Weird Al has his own wiki!

The vocals sound like something very much like early 90's Al. I approve.

Concur with everyone that Match Game is the awesome-est game show ever, and that CNR is someone you definitely need to see as a panelist on that show if you want to get the full impact of this song.

But yeah, he's going to be relatively unknown to a lot of younger people, since he isn't Miley Cyrus or a Jonas Brother. I can see the expletive-laden MySpace posts now from BrItTaNY88 saying how Al is no longer funny, has lost his touch, and/or his song is "gay".

I think the fact that not many people know CNR is the joke.

Possibly. Similar to the song "What Would Brian Boitano Do" from the South Park movie.

As far as the idea of doing research goes, I think it would be more helpful to research the Internet meme of Chuck Norris Facts. I had no idea about those until I researched them this morning on Wikipedia. Now it makes the idea of the song a bit funnier. I have a feeling that it won't be too necessary to know who CNR is to get the joke, as long as you get the meme reference. There quite possibly could be some references to Brett Summers or some of the other Match Game panelists, but the bulk of the song will likely be things that really have nothing to do with CNR.

Still, a song that juxtaposes Charles Nelson Reilly, Chuck Norris, and the White Stripes. This has got to be the most peculiar juxtaposition of elements that Al has ever come up with.

This would be appropriate considering CNR was

Not sure about that. If that were the case, then he could have wrote a song about a completely made-up character. I think the joke is--as someone stated earlier--that these are "Chuck Norris"-type lines about a guy who is as far from Chuck Norris as could be possible. But the only way to know that is to at least have a passing knowledge of who CNR was.

Therefore, if one doesn't know who CNR is, researching him even a little bit might at least help enhance the comedy of the song for most people. That's what YouTube is for! :-)

CNR is the type of guy who uses self-deprecating humor. Meaning he makes fun of himself...a lot. That alone makes him a good choice for this joke.

You can see tons of Match Game vids here

I must live in a cave, but it's the Chuck Norris thing I would not get. I get CNR as I have been a fan for years. He did the Sid and Marty Kroft show Lidsville(the Kroft brothers did GREAT stuff!).
