There's nothing wrong with a fan being critical of Al. Being a fan does not mean you have to agree with every business decision Al and his management company make decisions. There's no question that there are options to releasing these singles that could work better than the way Al has been releasing these. With five separate releases, Al should experiment a bit with what works best. Why not publicize one of them in advance and see what happens?

If I had to realllly nitpick, maybe saying "he doesn't know what he's doing" can be taken the wrong way. But c'mon, we all love the guy and he knows that. I can't imagine it bothering him, too much.
Visit Elvis' website to read "The Completionist Guide" for accessing all sorts ofWeird Al songs (and sometimes ridiculously miniscule) be it rare gems or ridiculously miniscule from 1973 to 2019. weirdalstar.com/uhf/

Jon is absolutely right here. Al's not God. We don't have to agree with every thing he does, and we can be critical of him when we feel it's warranted. It doesn't mean we're not fans.TMBJon @ July 30, 2009 06:44 pm wrote: There's nothing wrong with a fan being critical of Al. I don't get all these people coming in here with business degrees demanding commercials for Skipper Dan. I believe the target audience for his parodies is the general public. The target audience for original material with next to no budget is twitter/facebook/youtube/myspace.
One day you guys will spend thousands of dollars on something, only to then to recoup the losses via a marketing budget. Then you will spend next to nothing on something else and will market it for a similar next to nothing. Until then....

No one's demanding anything, let alone commercials.
I am simply saying that I think Al could have promoted the single better by SAYING SOMETHING ABOUT THE SONG on his website, Twitter, MySpace, or whatever. Free. No cost. No business degree needed for that.

One reason I could see that for why Al might not want to advertise these beforehand is the WYL fiasco. I remember he was very disappointed that iTunes dropped the ball on that and had all his fans waiting up until midnight and through the next day for the song. From his MySpace blog "What I Learned":
So, he's willing to sacrifice any potential pre-release publicity in order to avoid fan frustration. Considering that he's financially secure and his success or failure as an artist no longer requires having every single be a success, it's admirable that he's putting his fans first.

So What I Learned From All This So Far:
Overall, I'd have to say that the digital experiment was a success. It was very gratifying for me to be able to put a parody out while the original song was still at its commercial peak and it seemed to be gratifying to the fans as well.
I probably won't be as inclined to announce new singles in advance, though. I've learned from hard experience that iTunes is not able to guarantee a time or, apparently, even a day that a song will go live on-line. So perhaps it's best for me to wait until a new song is actually available, and THEN announce it.
Also, I'm not sure that I'd agree to give iTunes any kind of an exclusivity window in the future it seems like the amount of publicity I received from them didn't really compensate for the sales I lost by not also having my song available elsewhere.
