Geez, that artwork really isn't that good, IMO.

If the artwork is any indication of how good the song is going to be, then I think some people will be disappointed.

The "style" of the artwork looks kinda familiar though...

I tried Google searching different variations on "Rolling Stone + 'Weird Al' Yankovic + Skipper Dan" and I'm pretty sure I didn't find Happy Steves' article,

...but last.fm MAY already have the song (or at least a preview clip of it) although that site's such a mess I didn't find it at all...

Does anyone else want to speculate on the style parody target? I'm sticking with Jimmy Buffett, unless it's one of those true "originals" Al supposedly does from time to time. But I really hope it's not that.

Jimmy Buffet would be a guess of mine too, given the title and artwork.

I'd say that's a very good possibility. I can't think of any other well known musical artists that have ties to the tropics or places like that.

Jimmy Buffet is a good guess.

Could also be a reggae kinda thing. He's already done Bob Marley though.

I DISTINCTLY recognize that visual style - I don't know the name of the director/studio, but they also directed several They Might Be Giants videos on the "Here Come the..." and "Venue Songs" DVDs, including excellent videos for "Damn Good Times" and "Hollywood".

As for the musical style? I dunno, Jimmy Buffet sounds likely enough...or maybe Gordon Lightfoot? (I know, "Twine" was kinda Lightfoot-inspired, but it leaned much more towards Harry Chapin. And I'd also guess a "Sloop John B."-esque Beach Boys song if Al hadn't just done "Pancreas").

Maybe it's a more generic sea shanty/seafaring style. Maybe it's a faux-heroic tale about a fellow named Skipper Dan, with a similar structure to "Truck Driving Song," in that it starts out normal-ish before devolving into weird territory.

EDIT: the director's name is Divya Srinivasan.
Just gonna stand there and watch me burn...that's alright because I like the way it hurts...
