I think he meant "guest" as in "invited by the convention organizers to be part of the program."

Al at AlCon was just a lovely surprise.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Al only a surprise guest at one of the ALCONs?

I thought at least one of them people knew he was coming.

Yes, that is correct, Marissa. He was a surprise guest at AlCon I, but people *well, most people, except Kevin Cable, apparently* knew he was coming to AlCon III.
