Yup. It's real. I saw that and got it on tape way back when it was first aired on TV. It's still one of my favorite Al television appearances just because it's so different from most of his other ones. I wish they still did Circus of the Stars... Though, judging by how much the definition of "stars" has been trampled by recent celebrity/reality shows, it'd probably feature nobodies like Stephen Baldwin, Melissa Rivers, and Corey Feldman.

Although it's probably wishful thinking on my part, I'd like to think that Al is a bit ahead of most of the celeb/reality stars. At least he has actual talent, which is more than I can say for the three examples I gave.

Obviously anyone on this forum would feel that way, and I would like to think we are clearly right about it. But overall in terms of 1) the general TV-watching audience, 2) what pulls in ratings, 3) what network execs think, there might not really be a difference. However, the only real difference you can point to is that nowadays Al is probably way more likely to turn down a reality TV offer. Especially something that poses any sort of physical risk to it. Though I wouldn't be shocked to see him on Dancing With The Stars or something like that...

What makes Al smarter I think is that he appears to understand his place in the show biz universe-he doesn't over or under-value himself. He lives on the fringes of "general" entertainment as it is considering what he does for a living. I think he knows if he said yes to certain things of the VH1 "reality" show variety he probably would not get a positive reaction from the general public. A lot of folks look at the people on those shows and kind of feel sorry for them("look at what so-and-so has to do to try and revive their career-how pathetic").

I personally hope Al doesn't do anything of this nature. I don't see him on Dancing with the Stars either(even though this is notches about the VH1 show ilk)
