I agree with what Jeremy said..

I am another one who could care less about American Idol-never have. I could care less if Al was on it.

I've never watched the show. Way too campy for my taste. (Obviously if Al were on it I would watch. I've sat through some pretty terrible shows for the guy...)

But yeah, it's a nice daydream but Al is nowhere near mainstream enough to appear on American Idol for all the reasons that have already been mentioned. I think Jeremy hit the nail on the head with the idea that Al on AI would be something you'd see in an SNL sketch. [Paging Mr. Michaels...]

Al and Simon...oh dear me! I would personally watch it just to see Simon get all mad at Al's constant friendliness

Andy Samberg is a fan of his, right? Why exactly has Al never appeared on that show again? Of course, other than the fact my mind would friggin' E-X-P-L-O-D-E!!

i would totally watch that, and maybe try out if Al was going to be a mentor

Jeremy, there's being right and there's being nice. You don't control television. It PROBABLY won't happen, and you have every right to doubt, but it WOULD be cool if it did happen. That's all. I got no tolerance for those who mistake their own doubt for a set-in-stone rule of the universe, because none of us have any business destroying dreams. Leave that sh** to Simon Cowell.

Yeah, that's a good point! At the VERY least Al could appear in a digital short or something...

Maybe Andy's SO in awe of Al that he's afraid he wouldn't be able to give him direction or something.

You make some valid points, but I also don't think that Al's voice is any worse than some of the mentors (I'm looking at you, Neil Diamond). Don't get me wrong. I like Neil Diamond, but I'm never going to confuse him with a super-talented singer. Neil writes and picks good songs to sing, and presents them well. Other mentors from the show have included the surviving members of Queen and record producers- people who know the business and show of music, rather than just the vocal portion of it. As has been pointed out, Al's showmanship contributes a lot. I don't think that Al's lack of an 8 octave range disqualifies him from being a mentor some week.

As far as his age goes, I don't think that has much to do with his relevancy towards the music industry. Madonna would also be considered a quality mentor, though she's getting on in years. Al had one of the biggest hits of his career not too long ago, known by Idol's target demo- moreso than Kenny Rogers, Stevie Wonder, or Dolly Parton.
