Aha! See, like I said in the WYL thread, if they gave me some crazy backstory explanation for the cover, then I might stop hating it so much and start hating it only a little.

Ummm... you guys? I swear I wasn't googling for this (I was googling random word combinations to see if I could find any Al-related pages I hadn't seen before), but I found this article, where The Man says this (emphasis mine):
