i forget exactly what it was, but a 3rd or 4th grade girl said 'yannomik' or something at school today.

Yes, because page stretching is necessary.

Many countries write the "y" sound with a "j". Hell, the IPA (not the stupid APA) even writes it as a "j". So, in IPA, Al's name would be /jæŋkəvɪk/
