Oh, if THAT'S what it means, then I can sight read music... and it's pretty awful both ways. :biggrin:That's what sight reading is, playing unfarmiliar music just as well as unfarmiliar music.
I know, I know, you meant "playing unfamiliar music just as well as familiar music" but my Typo Cop side got the better of me again. Your explanation was quite clear-- sight reading music is not just knowing what the squiggles mean and being able to turn them into music, it means being able to do it immediately, at normal playing speed.
Note to Manda: Don't you think, though, that after over 20 years, eleven albums and hundreds and hundreds of concerts, what Al and the other guys don't know about each other's musical abilities is probably not worth knowing?
I'm still playing with the same guys I've been with since the early '80s. We're getting telepathic now.

Uhh.. you're welcome. I guess I'm relieved I'm not the only one who thought of it.I promised myself, I wasn't going to comment on the subtle innuendo. I'm glad you did, OE.
That Al is one lucky kid too (guess it runs in the family). He's 43 and his dad is still showing his picture to people. Sounds like Nick could use some more recent photos, though.Nice article. That Nina is one lucky kid. She gets her own private songs.

Not exactly. Sight reading is just playing music first time, without any preparation. You don't neccessarily have to be playing it full-speed, no mistakes. But if you can, that helps. If you did that for one of those complicated, full band arrangement contemporary songs, I'd say you are the greatest musician alive, except for Al of course.Sight reading music is not just knowing what the squiggles mean and being able to turn them into music, it means being able to do it immediately, at normal playing speed.

OE,I guess you're right its not worth knowing about. I don't know Im kind of afraid to say anything about this subject right now. Anyway I thought it was cool that he writes his own songs for his daughter.
Maybe I didn't say that as clearly as I might have. I wasn't trying to stop any discussion of Al's musical abilities (why would I? That's EXACTLY the kind of thing a fan forum for a musician does!), I was trying to say that after all this time, Al and the guys in the band probably know as much about each other's musical abilities as any human beings can.
And it is cool that he makes up his own songs for Nina, even if we have to wait until she grows up to ask HER what they were like.

After that wait for Poodle Hat, eighteen or twenty more years of anticipation doesn't seem all that unreasonable.

This is a Yankovic we're talking about here. 15 years max. After that wait for Poodle Hat, eighteen or twenty more years of anticipation doesn't seem all that unreasonable.
Actually, I wasn't even thinking about Nina as a possible performer (who knows what she'll decide to do, after all?). I was just thinking about her being a legal adult (with another couple of years just thrown in for good measure) for purposes of asking her about her infant lullabies. After all, if Miles Jay shows up to watch his dad perform and converse a little with his dad's fans, it's not inconceivable that Nina might.
