I haven't listened to this song yet, but if the song turns out to be a Styx style parody (via liner notes), take a gander at this:
Ask Al, January, 1994
Have you ever tried to do a parody of a Styx or Cheap Trick song? (Mrs. Hazander)

No, not yet.

Weird...looks like that Ask Al is now obsolete.
How much wood could a wood chuck chuck if the wood chuck's name was Prince?

I don't know....I may have a new contender for this style parody:

E.L.O. (Electric Light Orchestra)

The same band that does "Mr. Blue Sky".

Lyrics aside, it could fit in as a "new bonus track" to In 3-D or DTBS. Very 80's sounding.

Well, i hate to sound like the authority on this...but i'm in the know. ^_^ The song is in actuality a style parody of a band from the 70s called Sparks. Look 'em up, track down some of their MP3s (if you can) and watch the animated music video on the DVD side of SOL to see them in animated form.

Tho, for those of you who guessed Styx, that was just close enough (and what i had guessed on the first listen too)

Check out my review of the album on http://www.quickstopentertainment.com when it goes live this weekend! ^_^

If you want to know what Sparks songs to check out go find stuff from their 1974 album "Kimono My House". Particualrly, listen to the song "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us", which I swear I've heard somewhere before. (For some bizarre reason I keep thinking I heard it done by someone on an American Idol type show). It definetly reminds me of Virus Alert.

EDIT: Ahhhh! Now I know where I've heard this song! The guy from the Darkness recorded a version of it!

Also, here's Sparks version:

EDIT:

Apparently Al has mentioned them before in his iTunes playlist

Sparks - "I Predict" (Track 14): "Sparks--another legendary, amazingly talented band that's not afraid to be funny."

Now that I finally tracked down the song, it is definite Sparks. This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us, anyone?
I believe this might have been mentioned in an inetrview already, or maybe I'm mistaken.
Work, is play. Tofutti break today.
