Ryan Hopak posted this on alt.music.weird-al:

From Letterman's monologue last week. Sorry if the words here don't
capture the *live* feel of the delivery:

"Homeland Security pulled singer Cat Stevens off a flight and deported
him. Also, earlier today at the airport in Frankfort, we captured
'Weird Al' Yankovic."

Thought I'd pass it along.

Was the 'capturing' part of the joke? If so, I don't find it funny.

That's a joke? I don't get it. Thanks for reminding me why I don't watch Letterman anymore. He's gotten really lame...

Cat Stevens used to be a famous musician (Year of the Cat and others). He is now a devout Muslim. He tried to get into the US from England last week and was not allowed to stay in the US because he is on someone's terrorist watch list.

In my opinon, it's extremely debatable whether or not he's dangerous. I'd say no because he's always been a pacifist. (I sure hope that, ultimately, I am correct in this presumption).

Anyway, I think Dave tried to say that Cat Stevens is about as dangerous as Weird Al is dangerous. That is, not dangerous at all.

I thought it was hilarious.

Hope this helps.

That. Wasn't. Funny. At. All.
And I even got it too.
The Office: NBC, Thursdays at 9.
If you're not watching, you're doing yourself great injustice.

I can see the humor in it--in fact, I immediately thought , "Hey, a new clip for Al to use on the next tour!"

Oh, well--we all have different tastes...

Al Stewart did Year of the Cat. Cat Stevens did Peace Train and Morning has Broken, among others. I agree that Mr. Letterman was trying to point out that Cat Stevens is non-threatening, just as Al is. It gave me a chuckle, but nothing to write home about.
4 words that Al said to me that blew me away:

"How's Problem Child doing?" - 7/12/11

So awesome!

That's how I interpreted it. Letterman could just as well have said "John Tesh" or "Yanni," or any other famous musician not noted for promoting violence. So, I think it was flattering to Al, because the writer knew that a mention of Al would be funnier and would still make the point.

Letterman has made many jokes concerning the name "Weird Al" Yankovic more than the musician himself. I don't think that's a problem
You have quickly thought up such matchless phrase?
