World of Weird Al Yankovic

Okay, I made a post about this in the WAS DVD post. What I noticed was that there were so many websites and topics about getting it on DVD. Apparently, it worked. I think we should try something similiar for AL-TV. Someone can start a freewebs, another a pettion, ect, ect. Then, we can stockpile information on who to contact and demand it's release. I'm sure if we did it right we could get it done in one way or another. So, whaddaya say?

I maybe could handle the webpage, and, if I get my Photoshop reinstalled sometime soon, do some graphics for it as well.

Someone else can handle the petitions, though-- a busy highschool gal can only do so much and still keep up with homework. =P

No offense or anything, but I think it would be A LOT harder to get Al-TV out. I mean, it has other people's music videos and stuff. He'd need everyone's permission to release it, which would be kinda hard.

Go do a search for "The Muppet Show" or "The Wonder Years" on DVD and you'll see why it's very likely that this will never happen.

Music rights for television shows are very tricky when it comes to home video productions. "The Muppet Show" had to be edited quite a bit due to restrictions on what music they could get the rights on. The studio that owns "The Wonder Years" has more or less abondoned all hopes of ever getting the show on DVD for the same reasons.

I highly doubt MTV would bother going through the headaches of trying to obtain music rights for a project that, let's face it, has a very limited audience. Even with "Beavis and Butthead," which has a much larger audience, they had to cut the vast majority of videos.

The only way we'll ever see any ALTV commercially released on DVD is POSSIBLY in the form of a "Best of" set featuring Al's news bits, Harvey stunts, and MAYBE interviews. But even with the interviews they might have some legal hurdles to climb. And again, MTV owns the specials, and I really doubt they'd take the time and money to put it out on DVD.

Also, think about this. MTV has produced many television shows on DVD. But how many one-time specials have they put out on video? Not too many.

I hate to be a Negative Nancy, but I'm just trying to keep people from gaining false hopes for something that will likely never happen.

But of course, I thought it very unlikely that TWAS would make it to DVD either, so...

Well, I still think it's worth the time. If they can put TWAS out, they can do this. And I'm sure it'll have more appeal. Besides, even a best of would be okay.

Yeah, I would say a best-of set is the only thing that's even possible. Frankly, I never really cared about the videos by other artists that he played in some of the past Al-TVs so I don't really care about them being cut. The polka videos would get the axe as well.

Well, for me the best parts of ALTV, aside from the interviews were the videos that Al would talk or sing over. And those won't ever be released on DVD for the reasons I stated above.

Yup. This is a very big rights/money issue.

And the problem is, any company investing in this doesn't have a projection for how much it would sell. They could look at UHF or TWAS, but overall, those aren't the biggest telling factors.

Rhino knows Mystery Science Theater 3000 will sell. The company putting out Beavis & Butthead knows that'll sell. They're willing to get around right issues to a point, but they'll never be able to put out anything complete. It's downright impossible (In the case of MST3K in particular, some people refuse to sell the rights because they're being made fun of, and not on the scale of B&B where at least if you're being made fun of, it's exposure to a mass audience, not just a cult audience, which is another strike to Al TV)


A best of Al TV is very possible, but that's all you'll get. When money's involved, you probably can't get much
