Downloading Especially Hurts Al

I think that if it wasn't for KaZaA, iMesh, LimeWire, whatever the latest downloading program is today, Poodle Hat would be doing a lot better.

I can hear you all now though...

"But Jon," you say. "I think internet downloading is hurting all of the record industry..."

Well yea, but it hurts Al even more and here's why...

Most people use Kazaa to download the singles or songs they know from an artist. For Al, its slightly different. They hear he's got a new album, they find out what songs he's parodying, then they download the ones they are most interested in. A simple search on Kazaa shows a lot more copies of the parodies available than the originals. Let's face it, most people know Al for his parodies so that's what they are going to be interested in. By the nature of Al's music, people aren't going to spend $19 on his album when they can get all six songs that they really want to hear from Kazaa.

On any other artist its like "Well I have the single, its good so maybe I'll get the CD." For Al, though, its like "Well I have the single, but there are only five other parodies worth downloading on the CD so I'll just get those and save my money."

Anyway, that's my theory. :sleepy:

It's not hurting Al that bad because 70% of the songs on Kazaa under his name aren't even by him at all. (Seriously. I did an alalysis of it today, and only 4 out of about every 15 songs are by Al at all!)

And I've seen ALL the tracks on Poodle Hat spread out equally among Kazaa.

you honestly think the kazaa effect is bigger than the no single/video effect?

definately not.

and i want to reserve judgement until after AL-TV to see if we get a video out of it, but i think the worst thing about this album is its lack of video.

if it wasnt for the eminem feud getting publicity, no one would know about the video. in fact, that controversy was used as the main press release for the albums release.

i think that Al's publicist must have been asleep for this album, but we'll see what happens when Al-TV comes out...

the few times I checked kazaa (out of curiousity, why download if I had the CD?) they only had one or two PH songs....and tons of songs that....grrr....don't belong to Al! My dad's friends downloaded them and said they were Al....I was asking him how Al was singing a girl's voice.....he just shrugged his shoulders....

Sarah

that's why he isn't going to the concert....he's working time for my dad....

Well, you guys do realize that Wierd All Yankovich is the ONLY person in the WHOLE WORLD who's EVER done a funny song, right? :sleepy:

Wierd Al Yankovich may be more proliferate than our boy, but he's not nearly as proficient.

Reminds me whenever I play She Drives Like Crazy, one of my friends went to me, "I know this is an Al album, but is that a girl singing?"
