Playing devil's advocate....

Most of the Al shows I have been to have a lot of kids who may or may not be there with a parent. When I see people leaving, often its kids who don't know there is an encore (I tell them to wait!) Not everyone going to see Al knows anything about what his show is like--I didn't before my first one. I would wager most people at shows are at their first one, or only go every 2-4 years when Al hits their area. And of course, there are people who KNOW there is an encore but who are not as invested in the performance as we are and would rather beat the crowd out of the parking lot!

And not every artist does encores--I've certainly seen my share that did not.

I wish more bands didn't do encores. It's just such an assumed thing nowadays that anyone who's ever heard of live music knows the band is coming back to play a few more songs. The only exception I have seen is a few bands coming back for a second encore, which, more or less, serves the purpose of what the first encore is supposed to be. But I say: just play all the songs you want to play, and get off the stage. Don't make us wait around for a few minutes like it's "special," because it's not--we know you're coming back.

And I'm not just talking about Al; I'm talking about live acts in general.

I believe the true meaning of encores has been lost. It should be something special and extra because the audience was pleased with the performance. If Al did something AFTER Yoda, that would be a true encore (like in Albuquerque).

I don't think W&N will be the opener. I agree that it would make a great opener, but artists usually try to stick their big new songs somewhere near the end of the show. Of course, as you mentioned, CP was originally the opener. However, it was moved down in the setlist. I think W&N will fall in the same place in the setlist as CP.

I figure that the beauty part of encores as currently done is that if an artist ever gets an audience that is so apathetic they won't even applaud much at the "official" end of the show, they can skip doing the last 2 songs. :P

I like Al's encore. I hope he keeps it.

But also, CP was an odd situation because it hadn't received virtually any airplay and there was no video to promote it, so it seemed as if Al originally felt that opening shows with the new intended hit was a good way to get the non-diehard fans familiar with it. W&N, however, has had a ton of exposure already, so there's probably going to be less of a need to bring it out early.

If DICYO is in the set (and it likely will be), Al should play the K-Fed interview directly ahead of it.

Actually, I think it'd be more fitting to play the Jessica Sampson interview, and cut it off right after the bit about the "CHEEEEESSSE!" Then go right into DICYO.

He should play the K-Fed interview right before "You're Pitiful." ;)
