It was a great evening. Had fun meeting w/ Vikki, Jordan, Tina & her 2 kids (whose names I don't remember, sorry) and Melissa at Genghis Cohen's. The Chicken Tom Tom was great, and I'm eating the leftovers now (and dropping the occasional piece of asparagus down the neck of my tank top
)
The celebrity guests bring shorts to show before the film they've picked; Al showed the "educational" short that preceded the actual Al's Brain movie, his sway pole clip from Circus of the Stars (he looked scared-- and very athletic. That goofy looking accordion player had amazing muscle control and balance). And, last but not least, the CNR video, he said just so he could see it on the big screen. But it was also, I thought, the best choice of the Internet Leaks videos for a film-buff audience.
I couldn't do a precis of the whole interview with Al, but he told us what he thought the key to good spoof comedy was, and I think his own work shows he walks the walk, not just talking the talk: he said good spoof comedy should be funny even if you don't know the source material. It's not enough just to call out pop culture references.
After the movie, they showed the video for One More Minute so that we could see for ourselves how much OMM owed to Elvis Presley by way of "Nick Rivers." And the answer is, quite a lot.
Melissa and I misbehaved by singing along with the video.
Al stayed and met and greeted afterward. He seemed to like the bottle of Purell that Vikki brought him. I even had a chance to chat a bit with Suzanne (bananas and jellyfish-- her vacation had a bit too much of both).
A lovely evening.
