I don't really know what I would do. There would probably be a slim chance that I would ever get a chance to meet him again soon, but I would probably be way to excited to rudely interrupt him or say anything to him at all, so I don't know.

I would say hi and maybe have a small conversation, but leave it at that. I've already had some photos with Al, anyways.

Well, I also think you would be able to gather from the situation. If he's clearly in a hurry or getting annoyed, then by all means I would back off after a quick 'hi.' But if it's a more relaxed situation, then by all means would I ask if he'd be willing to take a picture or give an autograph.

The original question, however, was whether it was OK to show up at a place Al tweets he is going to be with the express purpose of running into him. And it seems like we all agree this is an OK thing to do, rather than falling under that dreaded "stalking" category?

I figure that if Al tweets it, he's going into the situation open-eyed. I still hope he doesn't encounter any real stalkers, of course, but I don't think you'd scare him, Jon. :P

I met Al briefly when I was a mere child of 19 ('twas 1984). I was a big fan then but have since become a much bigger fan (must be the donuts). At this point in my life, I barely have the stamina to go to the concerts, much less fly to LA and try to chase him around. But I have imagined meeting him again so many times that I know exactly what I'd say. First, I'd try to resist the urge to genuflect. Then I would calmly (yeah, right) say, "AL ! My lord and savior! How, uh, art thou?" I hope that that would get me a chance to tell him how he saved my life. But I agree that it would be fairly obvious whether he was in a hurry and that we probably wouldn't have time for much of a conversation, if we were even fortunate enough to meet up with him. I know it would be a struggle for me not to grab his sweet face and kiss him, but I would absolutely hold out my arms in the International Sign for Hug Me, assuming I was able to move at all, and from there I'd leave it up to him.

I only met him the one time in '84, for probably three minutes (pre-show meet&greet), but I have missed him desperately every day since. He sure makes a great first impression :inlove:
Praise AL!

(Thanks for saving my life, AL!)

Pretty sure it only counts as stalking (in legal terms) if you repeatedly bug a person, phone them up and follow them around. It certainly isnt stalking to greet a person politely and presently be on your way.

It'd be fairly idiotic to ask for a signed photo in a supermarket and tbh I'm not sure asking for an autograph would be appropriate anyway.

I recently met Melanie Mayron the actress for lunch and it was only DAYS later it dawned on me I hadn't asked for an autograph, but as Nancy rightly pointed out, its not something you do when youre lunching with a friend.

If i bumped into Al in a supermarket I probably would go up and greet him in a friendly way if he was just standing around or maybe just smile and nod if he was busy, in which case I might loiter in the parking lot to see if there was a better opportunity, but I'm pretty sure I wouldnt make him sign anything while he was inside the store, that might be embarrassing for him.

I think the general rule is just not to be an annoying jerk

That reminds me of an amusing anecdote. Not mine, alas.

Vikki happened to run into Al and Suzanne at ComiCon (Comic Con? Comicon?) and went rooting in her purse for something for Al to sign. Much to his bemusement, she came up with a Weird Al concert ticket stub. He wondered if she always carried it around, IIRC.

That said, I do currently have a Weird Al concert ticket in my wallet (not the stub, a whole ticket from the OC Fair show I missed completely due to horrible traffic).
