Strange. Why?

The same rule applies to piercings too. When you get tattooed or pierced, there is an opportunity to come into contact with someone else's blood, thus inheriting any blood-transmitted disease they have. So, those who are collecting the blood ask for a year to see if any disease surfaces. You'll notice that they ask the same types of questions about any activity that may have put your blood in contact with another person's blood: blood transfusions, transplants, or drug use with a needle, for example. It's all for the ultmate safety of the blood recipient.

Again, any respectable tattoo or piercing place takes measures to eliminate or minimize exposure to someone else's blood, so it's probably not as much of an issue as it was before, but I think it's still a good rule to follow.

I never knew that. Good thing i didnt have to give blood for any reason this year!

I will probably be getting my al tattoo on monday while on my break. Hopefully i will be able to get on the net and tell you all how it went as i have a ten day break over christmas. :biggrin:

But Dave, how can you come into contact with someone else's blood during a tat or piercing? Plus, don't they usually test your blood before you can donate it?

I haven't donated blood, but I've donated plasma. They do test your blood before you donate and such. Not to mention, they ask you a bunch of really odd questions.

Re-using needles, or not properly cleaning other supplies that potentially may come into contact blood, for example.

All blood is tested after it's donated, if that's what you mean. Other than a series of questions, I don't know what other types of screening they do before actually drawing blood, I've never given blood.

Never, ever go to a place that re-uses needles. If they don't use clean needles every single time, run - don't walk- as fast as you can.

And donating blood/plasma? If you are doing it in a reputable place (hospital/clinic/Red Cross) there is no chance of getting blood borne diseases from giving blood/plasma.

They do test it after it's donated (that's what the extra little tubes they draw are for) but it's not unheard of for contaminated samples to get past screening.
