I am trying for the one, but I can get there with two others.

Jim is in Al's band.

Jim did compositions for a Disney Channel TV Movie called "Rip Girls" which was directed by Joyce Chopra.

Joyce also directed a film called Smooth Talk.

The musical director of Smooth Talk was James Taylor.

Art Garfunkel wrote a tribute to James Taylor for Rolling Stone.

Here's the connection I knew about:
Jim is in Al's band. Jim also was/is in a songwriter's group with Maia Sharp, who collaborated with Art Garfunkel on an album and a tour.

Jim West was in the band Johnny Lyon and the Hitmakers with Steve Jay.
Steve met up with Al and joined him and Jon's band in 1982.

Well, it's not about Jim being in Al's band...

Mike McCready was in Pearl Jam with Matt Cameron, who was also in Soundgarden. The Soundgarden hit "Black Hole Sun" was included in "The Alternative Polka."

I guess that can count, considering it didn't include Jim in Al's band - but I was thinking of a more indirect route, like...

Jim was in a movie called Bob Roberts (I've never heard of it but IMDB has).

James Spader was also in Bob Roberts.

James Spader is in Boston Legal with William Shatner, whose toupee gets purchased in Al's song "ebay"

Oh, Bruce Dickinson:

On the BBC 6 Music website, Bruce answers the question "A record that makes you laugh?" with "Springtime For Hitler," which is the name of the show produced in "The Producers." Nathan Lane was in the Producers on Broadway. Nathan Lane was also in "The Birdcage" with Hank Azaria, who does voices on the Simpsons, which Al (and the band) appeared on.
