Well I thought it was 27 shades of awesome, myself.

Wow, that was awesome. Looks like JibJab has gotten even better at their animating. The first time I watched this I was just looking at the animation style but the more times I watch the more gags and such. My favorite parts are the first opening scenes where he is just stalking around. The "and usually I stare" part is funny with his expressions

. And also when the police come and they're punchin him in the face, he's in the police car, and then he's singing in the Talent Night for the Lynwood County Jail. This animation tops all of the others on the album in my opinion. It's just funnier, and I like that style of flash animation.

I'm gonna rank it against the animated videos on SOL. I'd put it right about in the middle, maybe #3. Better than some videos on there, not as good as others.
Yeah, I kinda have the same feeling. I'll have to watch the SOL videos again to figure out just where to put it. Overall I thought it was very good. The only thing that kinda bugged me was how a few times the way Al's mouth opened was just too different from what he was singing. I realize they're using a series of stills but just a couple more pics with his mouth in different shapes would have been a significant improvement, IMO.

Yeah, I noticed that almost immediately. It seemed very strange to me that they couldn't get Al's mouth in sync with the words, but if you look at their other videos, they're all like that. I think it's part of their animation style.

As I said I love it. I just wish the final gag had made it in. In the original animatic, the inmate at the end shoves Al's fingers into his mouth. I think that would have been the perfect capper!

Anyone know who plays his object of affection?

I thought it was quite enjoyable, more straightforward but also more entertaining than some of the original videos on SOL. Maybe not overly hysterical, but it had its moments. The highlights for me were Al's maniacal facial expressions and the clever parallel, and perhaps subtle commentary, between the "American Idol" competition scenes and the prison talent show.
And again, the Jibjab guys are the best at this style of animation. In the wrong hands, this video could have easily turned into a segment from MuchMusic's ugly "Behind the Music That Sucks" (shudder).
So now that makes two new videos that need to come out on DVD....

Something about the animation was off. Al seemed disproportionate (huge head, arms shrinking and growing) for a few of the scenes, and it was really distracting. Also distracting was how he was lipsynching some times, then doing some weird open/shut thing with his mouth other times. I dunno, the animation was creepy but not in the way that was intended.
It was an alright video, not one of my favourites, but better than, say, Pancreas.
Highlights include the stare and the fingers in mouth.
