Re: How many Weird Al concerts have you been to?
The first time I saw Al was in 2010 for Internet Leaks. Since then I've seen him twice on the Alpocalypse tour in 2011 and 2013 and I plan to see him later this month at the only show I can make it to on the Mandatory World tour.

By the sounds of it he tours A LOT. Has he done at least a tour every two years or so?

He tends to skip touring every third (and sometimes fourth) year. The Alpocalypse tour marks the first time he has done three legs of a tour rather that two which became standard starting with Bad Hair Day.BullMoose wrote:By the sounds of it he tours A LOT. Made it to #62 last night. A tally by tour (won't bore everyone with the details of every single show):
1996/1997 THE BAD HAIR TOUR (2)
1999/2000 TOURING WITH SCISSORS (14)
2003/2004 POODLE HAT TOUR (13)
2007/2008 STRAIGHT OUTTA LYNWOOD TOUR (9)
2010 INTERNET LEAKS SUMMER TOUR (5)
2011 PRE-ALPOCALYPSE SHOWS (3)
2011-2013 ALPOCALYPSE TOUR (10)
2015-20?? MANDATORY WORLD TOUR (6 and counting)
I'd have a few more from the most recent batch, but I can only ask Mom to watch my daughter so many times (though I anticipate others will be able to handle it as she gets a little older, plus she'll eventually get to come with us to a couple
)
At the current rate, it would take me, like, 12 more years to get to 100. I need to make up some ground here.

I just updated my concert tally as of now: 75 concerts so far, and plan to be at the show at the Greek this September. First show was on July 21st, 1999 (Orange County Fair, two shows). Busiest tour: Touring with Scissors, 32 shows. Busiest year: 2000, 27 shows (the truth). Jobs, significant other, mortgage and sick significant other have taken their toll on my tour chasing over the years.

Serious question, hope no one takes offense: why have some of you seen multiple concerts from the same tour? I mean, he plays more or less the same setlist throughout a tour, right? So what's the appeal?

Re: How many Weird Al concerts have you been to?
That's a fair question. My standard response to this is that it's kind of like seeing the same Broadway musical multiple times. Sure, it's the same setlist, but it's more about appreciating the spectacle of seeing that show recreated live night after night. For some people who go more than a few times in a tour, I think there's also some appeal to noticing the subtle differences and improvements from night to night. Have you ever watched a movie that you really love more than once? Sometimes you just want to see something you love multiple times because seeing it makes you happy.FreedomHaul wrote:Serious question, hope no one takes offense: why have some of you seen multiple concerts from the same tour? ^^^^ that is a better way to put it than I would have.
I went to my first show because I had been a fan a long time and figured I should see him once. That show was so much fun and there was so much to absorb that I pretty much HAD to go again. And again. Yes, its the same show, but its still a live performance, so its not a cookie cutter.

Plus they become events in and of themself. Get a group together and do dinner. Have good food and good conversation. Then a great show. After that meeting other fans outside the venue. Hanging with new and old friends. At the Mann the show ended by 945, the last of didn't leave the venue until 1230. It's just a good time to get together

If I didn't live in Smalltown-Nowhere Canada, I'd be seeing as many shows as financially possible! Such a fun outing and I'm sure it's never exactly the same twice.
