I can so relate to this song! I love it! All the talk about the laundromat and Top Ramen, thrift store jeans..LOL! Reminds me of when I first got married. I do not miss the laundromat at all. Just replace thrift store with garage sale. yeah. Heck, I still have a pair of jeans I bought at a yard sale nearly 20 years ago. I dyed them light blue *color number was 27 or something* about a year ago. Still wear them.
It's a fun song. Good one, Al!

4 words that Al said to me that blew me away:
"How's Problem Child doing?" - 7/12/11
So awesome!

Review:
Well, it's been a long two years and I am extremely happy to have a new Weird Al song to listen to. Overall, I'd say this song is no "White & Nerdy" but that is an EXTREMELY high bar to live up to, and I would still say it's one of Al's best parodies.
First of all, I think it was a great topic to start off this iTunes-exclusive marketing thing. Al was able to parody a number one hit while it still topped the charts. And furthermore, he was able to write on a subject that was quite topical at the time of its release. I think mewrio brings up a good point that by the time the album comes out, it might make more sense to take out the spoken word intro. But that's not because the economy will be fixed when the album comes out (it won't). But decades from now, it will probably date the song quite a bit to have such a specific reference. The actual lyrics contain nothing that ground it in 2008, and once the economy is fixed (hopefully!) the song will still be relevant. Al speaks to the post-college student in me with these lyrics and I definitely relate to a lot of it, even before the big bailout...
I think the comedy value of original subject matter viz a viz parody subject matter is about as funny as Al has ever been, and at least in this regard it is equal to White & Nerdy. Spoofing the rapper archetype by suggesting its opposite has always been imperative to Al's rap parodies. The Amish are about as far from Gangsta as you can get. White & Nerdy is pretty much the polar opposite of Chamillionaire's whole bit. And now, finally, Al takes on the lavish lifestyles that rappers always brag about. The narrator of this song is pretty much the same man T.I. purports to be in the original, just after the Dow sank 5000 points. Cold Duck instead of Patron, clipping coupons instead of popping bottles. While he may not have many personal riches, he still aspires to please his girl.
Is it just me or is the song mixed a little weirdly? The highs seem to cut out a little bit. Listen to the backup vocal saying "beans" the second time or when he sings the word "pizza" and it sounds like there is definitely some overmodulation there. This must be one of the unfortunate side effects of writing, recording, and releasing a song within a two week window. Hopefully this song gets a more detailed ProTools treatment before it is released on an album.
One last note - my favorite line in White & Nerdy was the part about him being in the AV Club because I was in the AV club in middle school, high school, and college. And then, lo and behold, I was also in the AV club in the W&N music video! For this song, my favorite line is the Hyundai shout out because I actually do drive a Hyundai Elantra! It was a great deal at a low price and gets awesome gas mileage. And the body sort of looks like it could be a luxury car from the front, so I could see why the narrator of this song would want one.
Overall great work, Al! I am very happy to have a new song to listen to, and I look forward to whatever else you may have in store for the next album. One plea, though. You have done more than a fair share of rap parodies in the last decade or so. Obviously, you have found a great niche, and all of them have been absolutely stellar. But would you mind coming up with a rock parody or two for this album, especially as lead single? There are a ton of huge rock acts right now - Coldplay, Fall Out Boy, I don't think I need to name them for you... It would be great to get the full Weird Al treatment for a rock hit, or even a huge pop act like Justin T. That being said, Jay-Z does have a new album coming out soon
Love you, Al. Keep up the good work!
