I just now saw this as it was posted in the updates thread! Great news indeed! I'm really looking forward to this. I'm happy to see him used in an episode focused on music. Wouldn' it be awesome if he became a recurring guest?
BTW, does anyone else find it strange that this episode features a teenage Homer and Marge existing during the time period when the series was already on television? Or that previous flashback episodes placed Homer and Marge in the 70s?

He is a reporter for MTV. He isnt on as much anymore, now that they got those young whippersnappers reporting I think they have put him more behind the scenes as he wouldnt appeal to the younger kids. Although he is more of a serious journalist, than say, Sway. I dunno, I tend to like the people who give me news to have two names.

... but it's also a little weird to see The Simpsons parallel universe imploding. In 1990 Marge and Homer had already been married 10 years.
Yes.

I can't wait for this. I wonder if Al will play himself or a character.

He'll play himself. The description says that Al will parody one of Homer's band's songs.

My guess as to why Simpsons "continuity" is being ignored is they gotta keep retconning things as the show gets older. Like how in comic books, you have characters who were Vietnam vets now being vets of the first Gulf War instead.
Anyhoo......I'm actually very disappoined Al's gonna be playing himself. Granted, that's not a bad character to play

, and it's cool we'll get some "new" Al stylings out of this, but I'd honestly rather have saw him as a character this time around. He was already Al last time!
