It's not actually tied up. They use a hair.. Clampy thing. I call them alligators. I could see it during some WBUL videos. And after Handy his stage hands yank it out if his hair. It's probably 100% easier than trying to quickly pull a tie or band out if his hair without him wretching back from tangles, hehe.
