Well, earlier they identified some portions of the city were damaged that weren't -- for example, the Causeway Bridge [the 24 mile long bridge over Lake Pontchartrain] was reportedly severely damaged. It turned out to be the portion of the Interstate 10 highway [which we call the Twin Spans] which crosses the Lake several miles east of the Causeway. A mistake make by folks who obviously don't live here. Some of the errors would only matter to those of us from the area, frankly.Driew_La_27 @ Sep 1 2005, 07:11 PM wrote: .....wow..... this is so sad...I'm basically speechless. One question, what are some of the errors that the media has made?
There have been others, but I'll leave it at that till the dust settles a bit, so to speak.

Jim, I'm not sure what to say, except thank goodness you and your family are safe. I'm also glad Vikki was kind enough to tell us about Karen. I hope she gets help soon. I want to help with the relief effort as well. It won't be a lot, but I want to try to do something. I wish you and your family all the best.

I'll be praying for you, your family, and the entire area, particularly your wife's coworker's family. The looters are absolutely sickening--they'll get theirs one day.
And thank you for the updates on Karen, Vikki. Hopefully Lasagna Hog (and AP) weren't too physically affected either.
Stay safe and keep us updated. My church is giving the collection money this week and next to relief funds--I'm definitely going to do what I can to help out.

Wow, what a post!
I'm glad you're trying to make the best of the situation. I hope when you get home everything important to you is waiting there for you.
I'm glad to hear that you think American Pie is safe, although I'll still feel better once I hear something from him. Lasagna Hog, and other WOWAYers in the same situation, our thoughts are with you too.
I didn't realize Karen was still stuck in the city when you called her Vikki.
I'm glad she's ok, but now I'm even more worried about her because of all of the sick :censored:s, as Dr. Dad so accurately described them, that are still there. To me, that's as scary, if not scarier, than the flooding.
Situations like this bring out the best in most people, but apparently also bring out the worst in others.
I hope Karen has enough food, water, and supplies to last until they rescue her, and when they do rescue her, I hope they bring her somewhere safe.

I don't know what to say either. I'm still in shock from the sheer immensity of it all, and how close it's hit to home. Well, ok, I'm freaking miles away and in another country, but you know what I mean. Just stay safe, and thank goodness most people care and want to help.

I'm not being condescending, I'm too busy thinking about far more important things you wouldn't understand.

I don't think it's inappropriate to echo Jim's plea by linking to the Red Cross's web site, where one can donate to the relief effort. I also don't think anyone who has been glued to CNN this week would argue that the people there need all the help they can get.Dr_Dad @ Sep 1 2005, 09:04 PM wrote: However, I urge you to support the relief effort for our neighbors and fellow Gulf Coast citizens; it is THEY who really need your help and support of every kind.
And, it also might be a good idea to go give blood sometime this weekend.
I know you're trying to remain strong for your family, Jim (and you seem to be holding it together a lot better than many would in such a situation), but by all means, try to get a moment to yourself for whatever you need...to cry, to scream, to vent, to breathe...whatever will help you get through this.
