I don't know... He had >30 years of practice, so I'd think if he can't sing those notes, there's not much to do about it. As I see it, the only way for him to sing

would be to sing that part an octave lower. He did something like that with "so sorry Debbie" line in Confessions.

Al's voice has changed somewhat over the span of his career. I would say that change has been for the better. Also, he took singing lessons from Lisa Popeil over that time span. Saying he had 30+ years to practice a song from MF seems unfair. I'm sure whatever decision he makes as far as performing "Word Crimes" live will be the best one for him, if that is the song he chooses to sing.

Of course he didn't practice THIS song, but I think his voice is as trained as it can be. He didn't take those lessons this year, so although additional practice can make Word Crimes sound somewhat better than on demo, I don't believe it can get "a lot better", as Muppetboy09 suggested.

I just heard the demo, and sure, it sounded rough, but, I dunno, he might still be able to do it. He might also adjust it. Everyone has on/off days. I sing, so I know this. We'll all find out next year for sure when he tours. I do agree that

probably won't be the choice for his appearance on this show. Hehe, I'll die if its' "Sports Song", complete with marching band!

Jus' gonna jump in here because of Patti's awesome post there about how Al's voice has changed-
Al's singing voice sorta grew up and changed just as he did.
From sounding younger, a bit rough, uneven and untrained, over time we saw it mature and become polished. Like Al, though it hasn't lost its natural flaws and untrainably human sounds and sweetness to it, it has developed into a voice of experienced, melodic fineness.
(did that make sense? Or did I lose the eloquence I was going for by 'fineness'? Sorry, crush-y feelings got in the way.)
I'm with you- I'll start cracking up if it's "Sports Song" and Craigy Ferg's stage gets stampeded through by a marching band!

!!
I'm gonna say the mystery song is "Mission Statement", though! *u* I do like that one, too, and it'd be cool to see it get attention!

It makes sense to me. Al, like most other musicians, matured as he got older. I'm just glad he has the same sense of humor as the old days.

Word Crimes was a Top 40 hit, so he WILL play it live in some capacity.
Having said that, it's probably the
most expected song that he could do on Ferguson, and therefore not very likely based on Bermuda's clue... unless he deliberately created this paradox to throw us off...

I will be on the Craig Ferguson show with Weird Al Friday night on CBS ( after David Letterman) playing a vintage 60's Silvertone guitar through a new Quilter Aviator amp.
