Well, the gist of the show is that the main characters- Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl- are part of a race called 'gems' which are literally gems. Their bodies are like holograms, but with mass. When they get killed, they retreat back to their gem forms to regenerate. They can also fuse, and combine their forms together into one single entity. The fusion has a different voice, and their personalities are more than the sum of their parts. When, say, Pearl and Amethyst fuse, they form Opal. When two or more of the same type of gem fuse, they make a bigger version of the gem.

And I think that Al's gemstone would be on his chest, as gems with gems on their chest are generally very nice and caring.
