I'm not sure whether it was the author's etymology or entomology that was defective, or maybe both, but he probably meant cicadas, not locusts.

Of course, I also take exception to the cicada comparison, on three grounds:

1) Al's not a pest.

2) I would be very unhappy if Al waited 7, 13 or 17 years between albums.

3) On another site I found, the cicada was described as making a "high-pitched droning sound."

7 years between Al-bums? We'd shrivel and die. And I disagree about his basic premise...while Al (obviously) does by far the best parodies (and comedy originals), I have no problem with other people attempting song parodies. The more comedy in the world, the better.

I think the problem he had was with other people trying and failing to write funny parodies. It's the failure part that's painful to listen to.

That's what I took it as too.

Here's a nice blog entry about Weird Al, Poodle Hat, and the autograph session at the Virgin Megastore when PH was released.
