With this exposure and momentum, I bet he hold on to #2.

It's estimated that Mandatory Fun has been pirated at least 40,000 times. (I made up for one of those by buying the album twice.)

On the other hand, 40,000 people just heard Mandatory Fun! (People that might not have listened to an Al Album if they had to buy it.) I'm sure some of them will become fans and start buying merch and seeing shows.

Yep. And it's not like Al's alone in this; every artist is affected by piracy. He sold a bunch of albums in a time when it's hard to sell any albums if you're not peddling formulaic toddler pop. I can say that as a member of the generation that brought you Napster, I have discovered quite a few cool artists by not paying for their music, and have subsequently spent plenty of money on them, including buying everything I previously obtained from the Grey Area. It's not ideal, but it's the world we live in. Al is trying to figure out how to make it work for him, and considering what he just accomplished, I have no doubt that he will.

Good news time:

Mandatory Fun debuts at 9 on the Australian albums chart:

This makes it his highest charting album in Australia, beating his previous best, Running With Scissors which got to 18, and a noticeable improvement over the last 3 albums which peaked at 26, 27 and 28 respectively.

In other charting news, Al has charted for the first time in the Netherlands and in Belgium:

Netherlands - #99
Belgium - #198
